The Senate recognizes its "serious mistake" in having approved the Ddl on organic farming which also includes financing for biodynamic agriculture.
The appeal comes from the Research Commission of the Accademia dei Lincei, which in a document defines biodynamic agriculture as lacking any scientific basis and observes that its possible public funding would discredit Italy.
"The Devil is in the details. And the Senators of the Italian Republic do not pay attention to the details. Only in this way can we explain how the Upper House of a country that is part of the G8 and currently presides over the G20 can, in the folds of a bill intended to the protection and development of organic agriculture, having voted almost unanimously in favor of biodynamic farming practices ", reads the document. The detail, for the Lincei, is in the misunderstanding that could make us perceive 'organic' and 'biodynamic' as similar terms, but "biodynamic agriculture is something very different.
So different that our Senate should recognize as a serious mistake having attributed a status to biodynamics that can even be supported and encouraged at the expense of taxpayers ", notes the document." Biodynamic agriculture - continues the Research Commission of the Lincei - it foresees practices based on senseless esoteric / astrological beliefs that seem to come from a treatise on witchcraft. Practices that not only have no scientific or empirically demonstrable basis, but are actually grotesque and in many cases repugnant. Practices that, if adopted, will discredit the quality mark of our country, which the Bill intends to enhance and protect ".
Without wishing to enter "into the merits of the interests that may have led to the inclusion of biodynamic agriculture in this Ddl", the document notes that "in some respects the story recalls that of the Stamina method" and that "one must however learn from the mistakes of the past, and above all avoid repeating them ".
The hope is that "as in the past in the Stamina case, the Chamber of Deputies will amend the law. Organic is now an important reality of our agri-food system - as well as attention to the healthiness of food - and this bill is not only opportune but timely and necessary. Biodynamic, however, cannot and must absolutely not fall under this bill. It is necessary and sufficient that this term be eliminated from the text ".
