From 15 May to 16 June the sequences of the Delta variant of the SarsCoV2 virus in Italy increased from 1.8% to 3.4%: this is the picture that emerges from the analysis of the sequences deposited by Italy in the international database Gisaid and conducted for ANSA by the Bioinformatics Group of the Ceinge-Advanced Biotechnology Center directed by Giovanni Paolella (ANSA)

From 15 May to 16 June the sequences of the Delta variant of the SarsCoV2 virus in Italy increased from 1.8% to 3.4%: this is the picture that emerges from the analysis of the sequences deposited by Italy in the international database Gisaid and conducted for ANSA by the Bioinformatics Group of the Ceinge-Advanced Biotechnology Center directed by Giovanni Paolella. Among the authors of the research Rossella Tufano and Angelo Boccia, who specify that the statistics resulting from the analysis "are based on the sequences published in Gisaid and, inevitably, cannot represent the exact spread of the virus in the territory".

The sequences deposited by Italy in the Gisaid database from 15 May to 16 June turn out to be a total of 1,705 and of these 58 correspond to the Delta variant (B.1.617.2). "Currently - the researchers observe - the most represented variant is B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant)", which corresponds to 1,351 of the total sequences deposited by Italy (about 79%).

Of the 58 sequences of the Delta variant, 28 come from Trentino-Alto Adige (48.3%), 17 from Puglia (29.3%), 3 from Campania (5.2%), 2 from Veneto (3.4%) and 1 respectively from Emilia -Romagna, Lombardy and Lazio (1.7%).

A similar evaluation was made for the period between April 15 and May 19, when the sequences were a total of 2,674 and of these the sequences of the Delta variant were 47 (1.8%) against 2,328 of the Alpha variant (87%). )
