Study: Distance learning as effective as summer vacation

4:02 a.m.:

A study gives the distance teaching a bad report during the corona crisis. Researchers at the Frankfurt Goethe University looked at data from all over the world - the result is sobering: "The average development of skills during school closings in spring 2020 can be described as stagnation with a tendency to decline in skills and is therefore within the range of the effects of summer holidays", explained Prof. Andreas Frey, who teaches educational psychology at the Goethe University, one of the authors of the study.

The loss of skills among children and adolescents from socially disadvantaged parental homes is particularly severe.

"This confirms the previous assumptions made by empirical evidence: the gap between rich and poor widened even further during the first corona-related school closings," concluded Frey.

However, there are also initial indications that the effects of the later school closings from winter do not necessarily have to be just as drastic: In the meantime, online teaching has improved in many places.

Intensive care physicians: fewer patients in possible fourth wave

03.09 a.m.:

The President of the German Society for Internal Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, Christian Karagiannidis, expects fewer patients in the intensive care units in a possible fourth corona wave.

“If the number of infections rises again in autumn, we will have to look very closely at the new admissions to the intensive care units.

If the vulnerable groups are very well vaccinated by then, there could be much less severe courses even with higher incidences, ”Karagiannidis told the“ Rheinischer Post ”.

After the pandemic break: Yoga has returned to New York's Times Square

02.49 a.m.:

After a pandemic break last year, hundreds of people did yoga again in New York's Times Square on Sunday on the occasion of World Yoga Day.

With high temperatures, people gathered from early morning for one-hour free courses on traffic islands in the busy square in Manhattan.

There were fewer courses this year than before the pandemic, but they were also broadcast live on the Internet.

USA extends travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico

1:33 a.m.:

The US borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed for unnecessary travel until at least July 21st.

The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Sunday.

The 30-day extension follows Canada's own extension of the measure on Friday.

The original plan was to lift the restrictions that have been in place since March 2020 due to the pandemic from today, Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security said it had seen positive developments over the past few weeks and was participating in White House working groups with Canada and Mexico to identify the conditions under which restrictions could be safely and sustainably reduced.

Bouffier: Contact restrictions possible if the delta variant spreads

12:34 a.m.:

Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) does not

rule out

a return to contact

restrictions

due to the contagious delta variant of the

corona virus

that is also spreading in Germany.

»I expect the Delta variant to be the predominant variant in Germany in a month's time.

Then the question arises: How does which vaccine affect you? ”Bouffier told the editorial network Germany.

Of course, people would travel again in the summer and it could not be ruled out that some would come back infected.

“The answers to these questions will determine whether we will get a fourth wave and go back to contact restrictions.

We can't rule that out. "

"I'm worried about the unvaccinated children at school"

00.02 a.m.:

The physicist and modeler Michael Meyer-Hermann speaks about successes and mistakes in the corona crisis - and warns of the danger of a new wave.
