Euro 2021: how the defeat of the Blues disrupts the hormones of their supporters

After an evening rich in emotions for millions of French people, disappointment or sadness continue to occupy the minds of supporters

Sad, disappointed, morale in the socks ... This Tuesday morning, millions of French people, supporters of the French football team, were struggling to recover from the elimination the night before, on penalties, men of Didier Deschamps.

Led then returned to the score before making the break to 3-1, the partners of Hugo Lloris - who, rare thing, stopped a penalty - offered an evening rich in rebound to their fans.

And if the players will take several days to “digest” the outcome of this meeting, this elimination will also play on the morale of those who believed in them.

We only have to remember the victory in the final of the World Cup, three years ago, and the collective euphoria it had aroused in France.

Conversely, a disillusion like that experienced on Monday evening risks having physical and mental effects on the health of the French.

“This means that we will no longer be able to meet to see matches and vibrate together.

Everything is over ”, regrets Alexandre, inhabitant of Hauts-de-Seine.

Because after more than a year of restrictions and loss of social relations, this Euro 2021 bore the responsibility of reconnecting with the “life before”.

In addition to this cyclical observation, deeper ills could wake up and manifest themselves among the supporters. "All the more so when it comes to football since it concerns millions of people who support, engage and identify with the players," warns Meriem Salmi, a psychologist specializing in sports performance.

Work by researchers at the University of Utah has shown that men's testosterone levels increase when they watch their team win, CNN reports.

A phenomenon that involves an improvement in sexual function and an increase in energy, because testosterone plays a role in particular in well-being and sexual functioning.

In men, it is the main sex hormone and a drop in its level can have consequences on sexuality: decreased libido, impotence, etc.

Women also produce it, but seven times less.

Big fans feel the same emotion as their favorite sportsman

To reach this conclusion, the scientists collected samples before and after men watched a game of their favorite team. The results showed a 20% increase in testosterone for fans of the winning team and a 20% decrease for fans of the losing team. "It's the hormone that makes you feel strong," recalls the French psychologist, who receives top athletes like Teddy Riner or Romain Grosjean. "Low testosterone does not allow your endocrine system, which is made up of glands and hormones, to supply what your body needs, and you may experience symptoms of unease," adds the Texas Testosterone Center .

Due to the scenario of this France-Switzerland match, another hormone was also strongly solicited in the heads of French supporters on Monday night: cortisol, which increases with stress.

“There was a lot of circulation in our body during the game, laughs the shrink.

And it will take more or less time, depending on your level of disappointment, sadness, so that all these thoughts are evacuated ”, warns the psychologist specializing in sport.

Old work, carried out in 1976 by psychologist Robert Cialdini, also shows that the result of a match directly impacts the social position of the supporter. A defeat makes supporters of a team fear losing their position in society. The researcher illustrates his words with two simple observations. First, the day after a victory, the fans of a team will proudly wear the colors of the club or the country, not the losers. They will rather say "we won", when the losers emerge from failure: "They lost". “Sport is a love story between athletes and fans. Mirroring your team, you can feel ashamed and even feel the same emotion as the athlete. But that's what's great about sport, these emotions, ”concludes Meriem Salmi.

Finally, more concretely, this defeat can have an effect on your diet. According to a 2013 study published in Psychological Science, fans ate healthier when their team won. Two researchers from INSEAD Business School compared the results of two seasons of NFL games with food consumption in about twenty cities. They found that residents of cities with a losing football team ate about 16% more saturated fat on Monday after a game compared to their usual intake. And residents of the winning cities were consuming about 9% less saturated fat. So, fancy a fast food or a pizza to comfort you this Tuesday?
