A beautiful SUV, comfortable in the city, also suitable for long journeys and light for the pockets.

This is how the new DR 5 is: with all the qualities of made in Italy and an attentive eye to the needs of the large population of motorists.

ANSA Motori has tested the Macchia d'Isernia car for a long time, probably the most balanced and the best successful of the Di Risio group.

As per tradition, a single full optional set-up, including the glass roof.

To choose there are only the color, the type of change and the power supply.

Single, petrol only, or double, even LPG.

DR, in fact, strongly believes in gas and offers this possibility for all its cars in the range.

DR5 is aimed at a wide audience, therefore it aims to please. Not for this, however, he renounces strongly personal traits and lines. The front is gritty, with a cantilevered grille - now the signature of the House's designers - framed by the large optical groups. The sides, muscular but not too much, are highlighted by a continuous line that fades towards the tail, where the DR logo on a black background stands out in the center of the large tailgate.

On board, the watchword is practicality. Everything is immediately recognizable and usable. Uncrowded dashboard, wisely designed to leave only what you use at hand. The driving position is high and the driver's seat is electrically adjustable. In the back row there is plenty of room for two adults, three if the journey isn't too long. The 340-liter trunk reaches 1,100 with the sofa folded down. The materials are of good quality, if parameterized to the price; edited the assembly. The infotainment is all concentrated in a 9-inch touchscreen panel, with the basic functions installed and the rest usable by connecting your smartphone: with AppleCarPlay or with a mirror link system for Android.

The real surprise, however, is on the road. The 1.5-liter turbo engine built by the Austrian Acteco delivers - in the dual power supply - 149 Hp, with a maximum torque of 195 Nm at 3600 rpm. Translated: no burning shots, but great progression and lots of torque where many get into trouble.

In the city DR5 proves to be extremely manageable and not particularly thirsty. And the LPG fueling - the tank is positioned in a compartment under the boot - makes any movement less onerous. On fast roads, the music changes.

DR5 is quiet, comfortable and even fun thanks to the Sport mode that can be activated at the push of a button. In this case, consumption is affected, which tends to rise a little. The manufacturer declares 9.2 liters per 100 km in the WLTP cycle, in line with our findings.

But it is an SUV, it should not be forgotten, with all the peculiar characteristics of the segment. And precisely because it is an SUV, we also wanted to test it off-road. Not extreme, of course: we are still talking about a two-wheel drive car. On the light off-road it behaves very well, and in complex conditions such as uphill starts or too steep descents, the technology comes to the rescue by simulating an almost 4x4 grip. The only real flaw: the absence of adas.

But, assure from Macchia D'Isernia, they will arrive.

Overall, DR5 exceeds expectations and clarifies the reason for the impressive progression in sales of the brand: there is everything and it is cheap, so like it.
