Apple has released the iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1 system updates for iPhones and iPads, with a critical emphasis coming in the form of fixing a security breach related to the Israeli company NSO's Pegasus spyware.

The company's official website about the security update states that "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited and has given access to the core of the system."

The update is available for iPhone 6s and above, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 or later, iPad 5th generation or later, iPad mini 4 or later and iPod touch (7th generation).

Recall, according to an investigation by human rights organization Amnesty International with the help of Hidden Stories, NSO's software has been used for years as a tool to spy on dozens of human rights activists, leaders and journalists from major media outlets around the world.

The spyware is secretly installed on a mobile device and gives the attacker full access to the device, being exposed to messages, emails, media, microphone, camera, calls and contacts.

Among the numbers allegedly included in the "Pegasus" list were those of French President Emanuel Macron and King Mohammed VI of Morocco, as well as those of former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the presidents of Iraq and South Africa.
