M.Nate Shamalan knows how to get people talking about him. Just before the end of the last century, when there were no social networks yet, his masterful film "The Sixth Sense" became the talk of the day thanks to the unforgettable turn at the end. After that, he had many more highs and lows - from "Unbreakable," his best film and one of the best Hollywood films of our generation; Through films that have become an example and a joke, for example "The Girl in the Lake"; And to a kind of comeback in recent years, with products that have enjoyed relatively critical and commercial success.

And now, talking again about Shamalan's new film, "Time" his name, and doing so of course in the language of 2021 - that is, on social media. The hit came up almost under the radar here, and even without an early screening for the media, but anyone who follows the international film feed on Twitter could not ignore the plethora of tweets, water and other references to it. For a long time there was no Hollywood product that provoked such talk.

The reason for this: in the best of his tradition, Shamalan bases the film on a far-reaching idea, probably relative to the creative form at the moment, whose extremism attracts attention. It is also an idea that touches on our deepest and most universal fears so that it manages to touch a wide audience and evoke dialogue.

This time, it should be noted, this is not an original idea of Chamalen. Similar to "Ice Train", "Time" is an English-speaking adaptation of a French graphic novel - "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederick Peters, although it should also be noted that the American screenwriter-director added many changes compared to the original.

Although the real twist comes only in the last minutes, we will be careful with the description of the plot of the film.

It deals with several characters, two families and several other types, who arrive at a luxury resort on a pastoral beach.

The holes in the plot are many and good, and begin as soon as they explain to us the circumstances of their arrival at the place.

This absurd explanation reminded me of the double and mythological episode of "Married Plus", in which the British who hang on to the Bandy family and take her on a trip to England to execute her and remove an ancient curse, hangs on it saying "we put the names of all the people in the hat on a trip".

Those present at the resort belong to different age groups, including one elderly woman and several small children. They all have a common denominator, they did not just find themselves together, and they all also discover that the beach is causing them extreme, frightening and unreasonable physical changes, which of course are also in a hurry to cause them great mental distress. They and we are left with only to anxiously wonder what is happening to them and why, and whether they will be able to stop it.

Relative to a contemporary Hollywood product, this is an extraordinary film. It has philosophical questions, and as in the "sixth sense" they deal with our relation to the body, and our pathetic attempt to escape death. Since the director casts himself here for a key role, it is impossible not to see in "time" also an allegory for the cinematic making itself, which deals with the director being a kind of God.

The photography work is in charge of Mike Giocolis, perhaps the most prominent horror photographer of our time, who has already done a mesmerizing job in Jordan Phil's "Something Follows Me" and "We".

Here, his beautiful use of the landscapes of the beach reminded me of "Rome", although this time the photography is in color and not in black and white.

The casting is also more suitable for a festival film than for a Hollywood blockbuster. In fact, there are almost no prominent American players here. Instead, we find the Vicky Cripps Luxembourger, who was discovered in Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Hidden Wires' and has since become one of the busiest actresses in the industry; The Mexican Gal Garcia Burnell, a movie star like "And Your Mother Too" and "No"; And two rising and young stars from the other side of the world - Australian Eliza Scanlan and New Zealand's Tomsin McKenzie, who was discovered in "JoJo Rabbit".

But actors, as good as they are, work with the materials they are given, and the script of "Time" crumbles like a palace in the sand.

Admittedly, it is based on a fascinating concept, one that makes you wonder - how come they did not think of it before?

And also: What would I do if this happened to me?

It has some sensational moments, of the kind not commonly seen in mainstream movies, and it's hard to remain indifferent to them - for example, sex between children on the beach.

And above all, we'm nervous because we know: if this is a Shamalan movie, then the real turn will come only after we thought the plot was over.

But despite all this, "Time" manages to lose momentum in its early stages.

He begins to repeat himself and step on the spot, all the way to the anti-climax.

Comparisons to "Twilight Zone" are the oldest trick in the book, but this time there is no choice: in the end, the film looks like a mediocre episode of the classic series, but instead of a thin, rhythmic 22-minute brace, it is unnecessarily smeared over an hour and forty minutes.

At the end of these hundred minutes, comes the hallmark of Shamalan - the big twist, which in this case leaves a sour taste.

It is of course impossible to know where the filmmaker went and put words in his mouth, but the fact is: the frame story he built here shoots arrows at the medical world and his attempts to find a cure for diseases that threaten us, and describes scientists and doctors as part of the problem.

That is, "time" falls rural due to in the hands of vaccine opponents, and more at the worst time it could have been.

It may not be what the director meant, but it's certainly not the movie we needed.
