In 2020, about 70 motorcycles were stolen on Italian roads every day (25,273 in the whole year), at a rate - in practice - of three every hour.
Of these, only 9,336, 36%, returned home.
In six regions (Campania, Lazio, Sicily, Lombardy, Tuscany and Puglia) more than 80% of the phenomenon was concentrated, with the Honda SH continuing - despite its 'seniority' - to be by far the preferred model by thieves, followed by Liberty and Vespa.
The data emerge from the "Dossier on Motorcycle Theft 2020", prepared by LoJack, a company of the CalAmp Group leader in telematic solutions for mobility and in the recovery of stolen vehicles, which collected and analyzed data from the Ministry of the Interior on motor vehicles and integrated with those coming from internal elaborations and reports on the phenomenon.
Last year saw a significant reduction in theft of motor vehicles, mainly due to traffic restrictions (in force at various times of the past year) which kept the two-wheelers off the road, increased controls and consequently braked. criminal activities. Despite the decrease recorded, 70 motorcycles were forcibly taken on Italian roads every day (three every hour). The downward trend in thefts (-25% on 2019) was accompanied by a similar trend in recoveries, which kept the percentage of finds below the 40% threshold, at 36%.
The phenomenon of motor vehicle theft appears today to be strongly concentrated in 6 regions of the country (Lazio, Sicily, Campania, Lombardy, Tuscany and Puglia), which alone account for 81% of criminal episodes: 8 cases out of 10 are recorded in these areas . Leading the ranking is Campania with almost 6,000 thefts (5,896), followed by Lazio (4,349), Sicily (4,251), Lombardy (3,083), Tuscany (1,564) and Puglia (1,272). In these areas, the chances of regaining possession of your vehicle are further reduced, below the already low national average. In Campania even only one out of 5 stolen motorcycles is found.
The top ten of the most stolen models confirms the traditional undisputed supremacy of the SH (6,887 cases in 2020): one in four motorcycles stolen is SH. Detached by more than 4,700 units, with 2,094 subtractions, is the Liberty, followed by the Vespa (1,844), Scarabeo (1,726), Beverly (937), T-Max (513).
The ranking closes with four models that, on average, register less than 400 thefts a year, Agility, People, APE and Majesty.
"The pandemic has only slowed down the trend of motor vehicle thefts, a social scourge that sees Italy at the top of the European level - observes Maurizio Iperti, Senior VP LoJack Emea and CEO of LoJack Italia -. Its diversification at the level is confirmed. geographical: in Northern Italy the motorbikes are resold whole or in pieces; in central Italy the thefts feed an international market of stolen motorbikes directed to Eastern countries; in the southern regions the thefts take place in a more traditional way, through burglary ".
In view of the summer and in the light of the resumption of the trend of thefts after the reopening of activities and mobility in our country, it is necessary to keep in mind a few, simple rules to keep your motorbike safe: always park in illuminated places, near areas busy and avoid secluded areas; use a mechanical anti-theft, tying to something solid; equip the motorcycle with a system that allows law enforcement to quickly trace it in the event of theft.
