Seven-day incidence increases to 16.9

7.15 a.m.:

The seven-day incidence has been increasing for three and a half weeks.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday morning, it was 16.9 - the previous day the value was 16.5, on the Saturday of the previous week it was 13.6.

The health authorities in Germany reported 2400 new corona infections to the RKI within one day.

A week ago the value for Germany was 1919 infections.

The incidence has so far been the basis for many corona restrictions in the pandemic, for example as part of the federal emergency brake that expired at the end of June.

In the future, other values such as hospital admissions are to be taken more into account.

According to the information, 21 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 28 deaths.

The RKI has counted 3,769,165 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,653,300.

The number of people who died of or with covid-19 rose to 91,658.

21 new corona cases at the Olympic Games

7.09 a.m.:

21 more corona cases have been registered around the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The organizers of the games announced on Saturday.

The maximum value was reached on Friday with 27 new infections.

Athletes are not affected this time.

The number of positive tests relating to the competitions in Japan rose to 241. In total, 23 athletes have been infected with the corona virus so far.

On the day of the opening ceremony, there was the first corona infected in the German team in cyclist Simon Geschke.

Another prominent case was the pole vault world champion Sam Kendricks from the USA who tested positive.

Hospital society calls for a move away from incidence as the only benchmark

7:04 a.m.:

The German Hospital Society (DKG) is calling for a move away from the seven-day incidence of new corona infections as the relevant benchmark in the pandemic.

"Politicians must finally act and define a mix of indicators," said DKG boss Gerald Gaß to the editorial network in Germany.

"It cannot be that the Robert Koch Institute is sitting on all of these data, not making any new suggestions and we are still only talking about the incidences."

Federal and state politicians from various parties had recently spoken out against incidence as the main benchmark.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) referred in particular to the now high vaccination rate.

A higher incidence then does not lead to an overload of the health system as quickly, he said.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which is largely responsible for monitoring the occurrence of infections, wants to largely adhere to the incidence as a guide value for corona measures.

"That is incomprehensible to me," said DKG boss Gass.

After all, it is about "obtaining acceptance among the population for measures against Corona".

The problem is how other measures influence the incidence value.

Gaß assumes, for example, that the new compulsory test for travelers returning will lead to rising incidences because more tests are simply carried out.

These developments would have to be properly classified, for example compared with the rate of positive test results, he told the RND.

The DKG presented a concept to create greater transparency with a mix of different indicators.
