The automobile clubs ADAC and ACE are again expecting a lot of traffic jams on German autobahns for the weekend.

The reason for this is primarily the homecoming traffic, announced the ADAC.

The summer holidays are coming to an end in Berlin, Brandenburg and parts of Northern Europe.

Drivers should therefore be prepared for “sheet metal avalanches as far as the eye can see”, especially on Saturdays.

On the way home, there is also a risk of traffic jams in Austria and Switzerland.

At the same time, the second week of vacation begins in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Therefore, there could also be long traffic jams on federal roads in the direction of Bavarian excursion regions and the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas.

Experts recommend that anyone who goes on vacation should leave during the week if possible.

At the weekend, travelers have to expect significantly longer travel times.

So it should be full all weekend, especially on the routes to the south and on the German coasts.

According to ACE, the traffic jam wave rolls on Saturday mainly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and return traffic starts at noon.

On Sundays there is a risk of heavy traffic jams from around 2 p.m. until the early evening, including on the roads leading to the metropolitan areas.

It doesn't look much better at the borders.

Due to the high volume of traffic and intensive personal controls, car tourists would have to wait for hours.

Travel counter-cyclically and avoid traffic jams

Wherever possible, the ACE recommends anti-cyclical travel.

It is advisable to start your journey early in the morning or in the late afternoon.

Starting a trip on Sunday can also be an advantage.

Saturday should be avoided as a day of travel.

In general, the ADAC advises avoiding main routes and instead using secondary routes.

Those who use mobility apps can identify and avoid long traffic jams at an early stage.

Weather-related obstructions and closures continue to exist all day on the A 61 and the A 1 west of Cologne and Bonn as well as on roads in the Erftstadt and Ahrweiler area and in the surrounding areas.

The automobile clubs expect further delays and traffic jams on the following sections (mostly in both directions):

  • A 1 Bremen - Lübeck

  • A 3 Würzburg - Nuremberg - Passau

  • A 5 Frankfurt - Karlsruhe - Basel

  • A 6 Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg

  • A 7 Flensburg - Hamburg

  • A 7 Hanover - Kassel - Würzburg - Ulm - Füssen / Reutte

  • A 8 Karlsruhe - Munich - Salzburg

  • A 9 Munich - Nuremberg

  • A 10 Berliner Ring

  • A 19 Rostock - Wittstock / Dosse triangle

  • A 24 Hamburg - Berlin

  • A 81 Singen - Stuttgart

  • A 93 Inntal triangle - Kufstein

  • A 95 / B 2 Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen

  • A 99 bypass Munich

In neighboring countries, traffic jams on the home routes also predominate.

According to ADAC, the classic tourist routes Tauern, Fernpass, Brenner, Karawanken, Rheintal and Gotthard routes, the highways to and from the Italian, Croatian and French coasts and mountain regions have the greatest potential for congestion.

Italy holidaymakers should also note that the rush to the coast traditionally begins on the weekend before the Ferragosto holiday (August 15).
