Tesla's

driving assistance technology

has long surprised and saved its users from accidents: from reacting before the driver or even avoiding an animal on the road by itself.

And although there were cases in which fatal accidents occurred, the Autopilot system is not yet a 100% autonomous driving device and the brand is in charge of constantly highlighting it.

Anyway, and due to the high degree of interference that it can have in driving, the system appears in surprising situations, such as the one now known, in which a drunk driver was saved by the car after

falling asleep at the wheel

.

Here, a seemingly unconscious driver in a #Tesla is filmed.

The incident occurred in northwestern Norway, on July 30.

The driver of the Tesla Model S, according to police,

is 24 years old and so drunk he fell asleep

.

The report states that “at 5:40 a.m., a Tesla stops in the tunnel.

The driver is found to be a 24-year-old man who had fallen asleep at the wheel.

He's also drunk, but stubbornly denies driving.

Although there is a video of him from the car… the necessary samples have been taken ”.

In the video it appears that the Tesla

tries to go to the shoulder to stop

safely.

But the driver of the car he's filming blocks his way over and over again while filming with his phone.

After several kilometers, the Model S system decides to turn on the beacons and stop driving completely.

The car was traveling at least 100 km / h on the highway.

The Tesla Autopilot is not an autonomous driving system, but a

driving assistance system,

and the driver is always responsible for the vehicle and must be alert and ready to take control at all times.

By activating the autopilot functions, Tesla reminds drivers that they are responsible for the vehicle and that they should

be prepared to

always

take the wheel

.

Fail-safe for people who fall asleep, the system regularly sends alerts to hold the steering wheel if it does not detect a force being applied to it.

The car stopped in a tunnel and it took the police 5 minutes to wake up the driver.

If those alerts are repeatedly ignored, the autopilot will eventually slow the car and stop it on the side of the road.

Something that in this situation could not be completed by the vehicles following the Tesla in the right lane.

From assistance to full autonomy

Drivers who are tired, drunk or distracted by cell phones are the top reasons for accident causes, along with speeding.

That is why many of the fatal accidents come from lane departures or from impacts with other static objects that are caused by the human factor.

Many of these situations could have been avoided with pilot assistance such as Tesla's or with an autopilot with similar functions and more and more models are incorporating.

And while full autonomous driving is yet to be achieved, driver assistance systems (ADAS) reduce the chances of accidents or, in the worst case, minimize the damage that an impact can cause. cause, both in people and materials.

Systems such as autonomous emergency brake, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control or blind-angle radars, among others, are elements that are increasingly found in new cars and that anticipate the future of driving.
