Giving young people the tools to better manage digital culture: this is one of the priorities on the G20 research table, alongside the potential that quantum technologies are preparing to offer, such as the security of communications and their speed, he said. ANSA the Minister for University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, on the occasion of the appointment dedicated to scientific research in the international forum that brings together the main economies of the world.

The development of digital skills in young people is thus one of the themes of what the minister called "the first G20 that looks to research as one of the elements of development and as a topic on which to develop agreements at a global level".

Organized in the aftermath of the G20 on Digitization and Innovation, the G20 Research will continue to pay particular attention to digital. It will focus on training, but also on developing the scientific and technological basis in this area. The hope is "to find, from the partners of the G20 Research, a strong commitment and sensitivity in giving young people the tools to govern the digital world", added the minister.

"We call young people digital natives, but we know that in many cases they do not have a thorough understanding of how digital technologies work and therefore need to be warned of risks and dangers," he noted. For this reason "training plays an important role in making everyone digitally enabled, without leaving anyone behind. Hence the commitment by all governments to bring the entire population to the level of basic skills". It is a job that according to Mass must "start from the schools", in the context of a dialogue with the Ministry of Education, and "continue at the university, for example by providing basic skills in all degree courses, and then focus on more specialization opportunities,as data science and cybersecurity ".

Promoting and cultivating scientific research in this field is as crucial as training: "it's fast research, with results that quickly pass to industry," said Messa. It is very important to look at digital as a transversal theme that touches on prominent issues, such as cybersecurity. Faster and safer online communications are closely linked with quantum technologies, "a very important topic for research, to which we will devote a special section," said the minister Messa.

Quantum technologies, to which one of the leading European research programs is dedicated, are "a sector in which Italy has expertise in the field of research as well as in applications". A true flagship of Italian research, with a leading role also in the National Research Program 2021-2027. In the latter, in fact, the area dedicated to Digital, industry and aerospace includes the development of quantum technologies alongside digital transition, high-performance computing and Big data, artificial intelligence, robotics, innovation for the manufacturing industry. The idea, concluded the minister, is to develop a network based on quantum communications on three strands: data processing, the more technological aspects and those of computing.
