Wireless: We tested Apple's new portable battery

The MagSafe Battery Pack may not charge the iPhone up to 100%, but the perfect design and fit for the device and operating system is a pretty good reason to buy one for yourself.

On the other hand, we are left with one problem that is hard to ignore - the price |

In a world where design takes precedence over functionality, we are left with beautiful smartphones that are unable to operate an entire day.

Precisely because of this, last month Apple surprisingly announced the MagSafe Battery Pack - a $ 99 portable battery that allows you to charge the devices in the iPhone 12 series without wires.

In fact, this is a product that came to replace the old method - cumbersome charging of the device with a portable battery and cable.

Last week, the MagSafe Battery Pack officially arrived in Israel through the Idigital chain, Apple's only premium marketer in Israel, at a price of NIS 549.

Is it worth the money?

We checked.

Design and comfort

The MagSafe Battery Pack attaches to the backs of the devices in the iPhone 12 series, and even when I shook the phone tightly, it did not move.

In addition, it can also be directly connected to MagSafe-supporting covers - such as Apple's skin cover or silicone.

Despite its weight and thickness - 115 grams and 11 mm, even with prolonged use I did not feel that it weighs too much on the iPhone, both in the pocket and in the hand. Also, it is important to remember that compared to a portable battery with a cord This is a pretty effective and convenient solution.

You will not reach 100%, and that too will be very slow

This is a battery with a fairly low capacity of only 1,460 mAh, which is capable of charging the iPhone at a rate of 5 watts.

For example, the battery of the iPhone 12 Pro has a capacity of 2,815 mAh, which means that a full charge will provide the device with only about 70%.

One of the biggest benefits you will find in the MagSafe Battery Pack, is a built-in integration with iOS, one that will show you the battery status on the lock screen or in the widget.

How is the actual result?

In a test I did, the MagSafe Battery Pack was able to charge my iPhone 12 Pro from 1% to 62% - and turned it off.

The charging rate is a bit slow and 20% of the iPhone's battery is charged in about 40 minutes.

While using the device, charging was even slower - but still did not overheat the device.

In addition, the battery can not be turned off or on, and once you attach it to the back of the iPhone it will charge it.

And it's important to emphasize: Apple takes temperature considerations into account during each charging process.

Overheating the iPhone or battery will charge the device very slowly and its discharge process will be faster.

This means that it is not recommended to use wireless charging in a hot environment - such as direct sunlight or an air-conditioned place.

For example, the support page on Apple's website states that "to extend the life of the product, if the battery overheats, the software may limit the charge above 80% and the iPhone will charge again when the temperature drops".

Reverse charge

Although Apple does not call the option "reverse charging" - like the competing manufacturers, but when I connected the iPhone to a wired charger, the battery was also charged at the same time as soon as the device reached 80%.

Alongside this, it is also possible to connect the battery to a charger - of at least 20W, and charge the iPhone at a speed of up to 15W.

And that's not all, the MagSafe Battery Pack can be used as a charging pad for Airfoods and other Qi standard products.

However, the headphones do not magnetize to the surface and this is a rather cumbersome option that may only be used with you in an emergency.

Bottom line

This is a fairly expensive product - $ 99 on the Apple website and NIS 549 in the Idigital network, which will not fully charge your iPhone.

On the other hand, if you are away from home most of the day and want to keep your battery percentage high, this is probably one of the most elegant and best ways to do so.
