"Working at a different level" or "the momentum is dissipating": What did the critics abroad think of Lior Raz's "hit and run"?

"Hit and Run", the series by the creators of "Fauda", Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, receives mixed reviews abroad just like in Israel: on the one hand "stupid developments" and "the story is dragged", and on the other hand "original and authentic" and praise for Raz's acting, Gal Toren and Moran Rosenblatt

Trailer for the series "Hit and Run" (Netflix)

"Raz is effectively contemplative and intense… His sullen and worried look is never less convincing, no matter what inconsistency the series treats Segev's behavior. His performance is one of the ones that held me back while my interest in the hit 'hit and run' faded."

Last Friday, the series "Hit and Run" aired on Netflix, created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, among others. The story is about Segev (Raz), a former fighter whose American wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident. He soon finds out that it was not an accident at all and sets out to investigate the matter and find the culprits. The series also stars Gal Toren, Moran Rosenblatt, Lior Ashkenazi, and the Americans Sana Leithan and Greg Henry.

In Israel, "Hit and Run" received mixed reviews (we liked it, although it is not a masterpiece). Abroad, however, at the time of publication of this article, not too many reviews were published on the semi-Israeli series. A few more sites that have written reviews or commented critically in one way or another. Also overseas, it turns out, the reactions to the series are mixed.

The American website Decider did this as part of the "Stream It Or Skip It" section, which is designed to help readers understand what is worth watching and what is not.

The conclusion in the case of "Hit and Run", as Joel Keller wrote: "Flow it! 'Hit and Run' boasts a fine international cast, an interesting idea, and opens up many avenues for a story without confusing the viewer."

On Lior Raz's play, Keller writes that he is defiant and disturbed at the same time.

"Helps the fact that the series is based on an idea that draws from his life in the IDF, but in the more dramatic scenes, Raz undoubtedly demonstrates more than just exaggerated emotions of an action star."

On the Indian site Lizer Bate, the critic Puja Drady gave the series 2.5 stars.

"The creators could have tied the story in five chapters," she wrote.

"The plot is exciting enough to be turned into a movie… The story is dragged through several episodes unnecessarily."

"When it comes to shows, Lior Raz plays a fantastic role," she adds, writing about Moran Rosenblatt: "While the actress is excellent, the stereotype of a pregnant policewoman bothers me. Can I please stop portraying male cops as having broken families and cops as pregnant women?"

Her words are stamped by Drady: "Overall, there are some exciting moments in 'Hit and Run.' However, I wish the series had a fast pace befitting the word 'Run' in her name."

Another Indian website, Cinema Express, actually praises "Hit and Run".

"While the tension and rhythm are excellent, the doing is on a different level…," wrote critic Marinel Rajaram.

"The plot leaves a good impression, overall - complex and complicated, as the story demands. There are some dubious moments of deception and 'nothing is as it seems', but most of the time the events described are very plausible."

Rajaram concludes: "Creating an entire series that deals with espionage and manages to be original, authentic and not a production line, especially nowadays - is a serious challenge. The creators Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz were up to the task, and how!".

On the TV site TVLine, the reporter reviewed Madden Tovi's review of only the first episode, apparently in preparation for a review of additional episodes. "You don't have to be a fan of Lior Raz to connect to Netflix's new geopolitical spy thriller, but it helps," she opens. She goes on to make the inevitable connections and calls Segev, the protagonist of the series, "a perfect blend of Bruce Willis and Michael Chicklis."

Daniel Feinberg, the senior reporter for the Hollywood Reporter, devoted a long critique to the series that is mostly nose-twisting. "Every momentum that 'hit and run' builds in the early episodes - and it builds a lot - dissipates thanks to increasingly silly plot developments, two ending episodes with tireless exposition and a superficial and exploitative ending."

On the other hand, Feinberg praises the game in "hit and run", especially of the Israelis.

"Segev's character provides for an immediate series a fascinating main character from the testimonies of Jack Bauer / any character of Liam Nissan," he wrote.

"Raz is effectively contemplative and intense… His sullen and worried look is never less convincing, no matter what inconsistency the series treats Segev's behavior. His performance is one of the ones that held me back while my interest in the 'hit and run' plot faded."

Feinberg also compliments Toren and Rosenblatt.

"I like that Thorne brings some humor to the dark series, and his well-worn and good-looking character provides a good contrast to his latest role in 'Losing Alice,'" Feinberg wrote, adding: "My favorite show is Moran Rosenblatt as Tali… Aside from being "pregnant" and a "loyal family member," "Rosenblatt made me believe that Tally is perhaps the most efficient and charming woman in the series."
