Google today (Tuesday) announced new updates and policy changes that will provide a safer browsing experience for minors. "Technology has helped during the epidemic for children and teens to continue learning during closures and maintain relationships with family and friends," the company wrote. "The more children and teens spend time online - parents, educators, child safety and privacy experts and policymakers are rightly concerned about how to keep them safe."

The major change announced by the technology giant concerns Google Images - the company's image search service. In the coming weeks, Google will introduce a new policy that will allow anyone under the age of 18, or their parent or guardian, to request that their images be removed from search results. Of course, removing an image from a search does not remove it from the Internet, but the company emphasizes that this change will help give young people more control over their images online.

The company has also announced changes to accounts for people under the age of 18. On YouTube, Google will change the default setting for uploading videos to the most stringent privacy option for teens ages 13-17 - which will automatically make users' videos private.

In the search engine Google will expand the "SafeSearch" setting, which helps filter out explicit results when they are available and already enabled by default for all users under the age of 13 and whose account is managed through Family Link.

In the coming months, SafeSearch will be activated for existing online users under the age of 18 and will become the default setting for teens opening new accounts.

New advertising changes and new digital welfare tools

Google will expand its safeguards to prevent the display of age-dependent ads to teens, and will block the segmentation of ads according to the age, gender, or interests of people under the age of 18. The company will begin deploying these updates to products around the world in the coming months.

"Our goal is to ensure that we provide additional protections and provide age-appropriate experiences when it comes to Google ads," the company said.

Also, in the coming months will deploy the technology giant filters Welfare digital new ways for people to block news, podcasts and access to web pages of smart phone that support YouTube, and activate the options 'Take a break' and Reminders before bedtime and turn off AutoRun for users under the age of 18.

In YouTube Kids will add Google's auto-start option and turn it off by default to encourage parents to make the right choice for their families.

More innovations

  • Assistant:

In the coming months, Google will introduce new default protections.

For example, integrate SafeSearch technology on your web browser with smart monitors.

  • Placement History:

This is a default default feature for all accounts, and people under the age of 13 cannot enable Placement History.

The company will soon take it one step further and the location history will remain off (without the option to enable it) for all users under the age of 18 around the world.

  • Play (App Store):

Based on existing efforts such as content ratings and "teacher-approved apps" aimed at offering quality content to children, Google is launching a new safety clause that will let parents know which apps work according to family policies.

Apps will be required to disclose how they use the data they collect in more detail, making it easier for parents to decide if the app is suitable for their children, before they download it.

  • Google's work environment for education:

To make web browsing safer, for kindergarten through sixth grade, SafeSearch technology will be turned on by default, while switching to guest mode and incognito mode will be turned off by default.
