No one will forget him anymore: Ren Danker's new show is not perfect, but there is no limit to his potential

At this point in Ren Danker's career he no longer hides behind the words of others, and he dances his truth all the way to the hearts of the fans, even if his range still stops him.

If on the way he has to scream his truth, he will do it - with a smile of course

Ran Danker hosts Ivri Lider in a performance at the Wohl Amphitheater (Omar Keidar)

At the 2008 Children's Selection Ceremony, Ran Danker was nominated for acting and singing roles, but he actually won the most avant-garde award in the competition: "Who would I most like to be my friend." The boys, and especially the girls, who wanted to be friends with the star of "Our Song" have grown up ever since. Danker, although he does not seem to have aged since day one, has also matured, but he learned to nurture the same Zha Na Se Koa who made the children of Israel want his friendship. Rather, it comes to him with an almost irritating naturalness. He stopped faking some reserved composure, and just let go, and in a more sober, more conscious version, he entered the most successful phase of his career with his head held high and an understanding that there is no catch. He deserves it. He earned this moment of glory with hard work and no shortcuts. In an obvious choice, he chooses to enjoy the moment without looking back.

In a performance last night (Saturday night) at the Wahl Amphitheater in Tel Aviv, Danker sounded better than ever, but the story was never his voice or even the choice of songs, but rather a sense of forgery that Danker conveyed to his audience over the years.

A feeling that he did not reach the screen in the movies or series in which he starred, and did not reach the stages in the plays in which he shone.

Somehow, just when it came to music performances, something in Danker conveyed insecurity.

In performances with Eli Butner he functioned as a soloist, but beyond the vocal role he made sure to stand in the shadow of his great creative partner talent.

Some would say it was modesty, or perhaps some extreme case of impostor syndrome, but bottom line - despite some songs becoming modern classics almost 15 years ago, Danker has failed to be perceived by the public as a musician.

That all changed in 2021. If you have not lived on this planet in the past year we will mention that Danker released last month the single "Crazy House", which to say that he is the biggest hit of the year feels like an understatement. The success, many parents to it, and the insane popularity of "Crazy House" may have to be credited first and foremost to the credit of Jordy, the producer who has the golden touch of Midas, but that misses the story a bit. One can also talk about Danker's radical change from ballads and soft rock, with a penchant for radiohead-style drama - a much more commercial poppy style. But most of all, it was the openness, and self-humor, that Danker belatedly developed into the most mysterious character Sharan Danker ever played - Ren Danker.

In "Crazy House," Danker reveals himself as he has never been exposed.

He talks about coming out of the closet, the label of "ex-boyfriend", the wedding, the days of debauchery (which it is not clear from the song if they are over) and all this in a cynical self-awareness that makes you want to be a friend of Danker again.

At last night's show, Danker performed the song twice, at the beginning of the show in a naked and virgin version, as it probably would have sounded had it not been for Jordi taking the reins of the whole business - and at the end of the show as the culmination of a small fire over the evening.

Decided to walk patiently.

Ran Danker (Photo: Omar Keidar)

This patience of Danker, so un-Israeli in nature, works for him at the macro level as well. The huge success of "Crazy House" would have been enough for him to fill Caesarea or the Hall of Culture, maybe even close some show at Yad Eliyahu with some discounted tickets at Shufersal and discounts for "friend" card holders. To Danker's credit, he chose to embark on the arduous snake path of Israeli music without shortcuts. "Only" two sold-out appearances at the Wahl Amphitheater, at the height of the August heat. This is a wise choice on the part of an artist who is doing the right thing. He saw Israeli pop stars conquer the country with one big hit and then crashed, and decided to march patiently, and rebuild the connection with his audience.

The crowd at the amphitheater consisted of a large crowd of adult fans alongside teenage girls, as well as quite a few members of the LGBT community of all genders and ages.

You are beautiful!

Look how beautiful you are! ". But while Danker's appearance is undoubtedly an important component of his ID, it's hard to argue that the audience that came to the show did it because of his well-groomed face. Just as he is not there because he is" the son of "," ex of "or "The one who played in that movie with that one."

All the beauties and beauties.

The crowd, like the singer, is there because of the music.

Part because of the current wave of success, some there for years.

Danker did not hide his enjoyment of the fact that the amphitheater was full.

For an hour and a half he did not stop dancing, jumping and dancing on stage.

Mostly, he seems to appear as he always wanted to appear, without inhibitions and without knocking an account.

Sometimes it feels a little excessive, with campy touches that at this point, when he is married to a man, should no longer surprise anyone - and anyway, it's fun.

In an interview with Avner Shavit, Danker said that "the big screen catches our face in an extremely extreme way, and I can not bear extreme expressions. That's not what my face wants to convey."

Danker's musical show seems to be a compensation for his acting displays.

To use his words: he lets his face convey what they want to convey.

And they want to convey pleasure, because he enjoys it wholeheartedly.

It's hard not to get carried away by the real happiness displayed on stage, which is quite a bit within the mostly fake pop world.

The guest appearance highlighted the limitations of the host.

Ran Danker and Ivri Lider (Photo: Omer Keidar)

All this does not mean that the show is perfect. Danker's singing voice is beautiful, and sounds more mature and confident than ever, but his range is still limited, which prevents him from taking risks or stepping out of his comfort zone. This is especially noticeable in the covers he chooses to stroke in the show. For example in "What do you want?" Ella Lee Lahav, who is not clear if there should be a comic pause or a kind of statement to the LGBT about the gender flexibility of the pop world. Either way, the result feels mostly like a filler who refuses to rise. ', Who felt like the first defeat in a fur dessert. Redundant and artificial.

The climax of the show came when Danker invited Ivri Lider to the stage. Supposedly, exactly what the doctor ordered, but in practice Lider's hospitality only further emphasized Danker's limitations. Voice-wise he can't compete in a head-to-head contest with Lider in a ballad like "I Got to Love" that was written for Danker, but also in a pop hit like "Mary Forever"Lider shows Danker that he still has a long way to go.

"Soon", the mythological theme song from "Our Song" written by Barak Feldman and Yoni Bloch, seals the show and fills the amphitheater with nostalgic singing.

Even Jordi in his own right gets carried away with the crowd and starts singing the familiar chorus.

But despite a good performance, it's hard not to compare in the head to the original performance of the ex - Ninet, and understand that vocally it is not there yet.

To his credit it can be said that few are there.

Blooms in the new songs.

Ran Danker (Photo: Omar Keidar)

Bottom line Danker has a lot of good things to take from the first shows after "Crazy House." His old hits with Eli Butner are enough to make the show deeper and more diverse. In fact, "Let's Leave" (which Butner wrote with Gilad Segev) has never sounded better. "Equal," which received an electronic update in part, turned from an optimistic anthem into an angry protest song without changing the comma in lyrics. But these were actually Danker's new songs in which he flourished more than anything, and showed the potential that his career has in the future. How did a smart woman ever say? Less aspiration halala and more trilli trallah.

Except for "Crazy House" there was "When I Say No", which came out in the shadow of the Corona in April 2020 and ironically did not become a great success, although it completely communicates with the events that accompanied us all in the Corona Year. Even a peek at Danker's next single, "My New Dress," manages to lift the audience even on first and virgin listening. A bit of a miss that the song did not come out in time for the Pride Parade. This is a crazy pop bomb, accompanied by provocative words that could provoke a storm among conservative audiences.

It's doubtful if Danker is doing anything intentionally hurting or causing a stir, but at this point in his career he is no longer hiding behind the words of others, and he is dancing his truth all the way to the hearts of the fans. If on the way he has to scream his truth, he will do it - with a smile of course. This is exactly what Danker did yesterday in the park. It does not make his show perfect, but when the fun on stage seems so authentic, it's hard not to get carried away with it.Everyone who was in the park yesterday would probably want Sharan Danker to be his friend.
