Everything has to be washed away: the tribute show to Meir Banai was exciting, but hid a disturbing truth

Amir Dadon gave one of the most beautiful performances seen on stage in recent years, Arkady Duchin thrilled, the Jews bombed and Noam Banai, Meir's son, mentioned what an amazing thing genetics is.

And yet, among all the charming gestures, there is one thing that stood out in its absence - and should not be ignored

The crowd was already on its way out.

"All the animals go out at night. Prostitutes, drug dealers, stoned, drug addicts, gays, perverts, disgusting," is how Robert De Niro's character depicts New York City in Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, "Taxi Driver."

In one of the highlights of the film, he predicts that "one day it will rain and wash away all the filth from the streets."

The concept of a heavenly, perhaps divine, intervention that would help clear the city streets like Noah's biblical flood has blended into Meir Banai's "rain." As a character in Scorsese's film, doubt as the asphalt streets themselves.

This is a timeless song.

The hope of a flood that will sweep the country feels so topical while the country is being burned, literally, by huge fires.

This human cry, which evokes immediate sympathy, is at the heart of Meir Banai's work.

This is his stamp.

The trademark that made him one of the favorite creators who have been here.

It seems to cross genders, cultures, ethnicities and styles.

You can love Meir Banai and Shalom Hanoch, you can love Meir Banai and Sarit Hadad, you can love Meir Banai and Balkan Beat Box.

His magic remained in his music even long after his physical character left the world.

The tens of thousands of Israelis who filled Zappa Live Park Rishon Lezion yesterday did so with great love, for an artist who deserves such a beautiful evening.

But before we talk about one of the most beautiful stages ever seen in Israel, the amazing music that has received a new interpretation and the wonderful sound that made the huge amphitheater sound intimate and enveloping - we need to talk about the elephant in the room. More precisely, on the elephant that is not in the room. The year is 2021, and it is impossible for a lineup for a big and exciting show to include 22 singers and only three singers. More than seven singers for each singer. Just not possible. Yes, this is a comment that is usually not included in the reviews, and even if it is, then it is pushed to the margins. But the music press can not restrain this norm. There is no shortage of good Israeli singers, and there is no excuse in the world for this stark gap in the relationship between women and men, certainly in an event that is all a salute, tribute and a good soul lift.

And if things are already unpacking that are usually pushed to the margins, perhaps this is an opportunity to give a stage to the constant contempt of the audience of ticket buyers for music performances in Israel, which is especially noticeable at live parks in Rishon Lezion. Road sections that are closed only to celebrities cause huge traffic jams in the show area, the large parking lot next to the amphitheater for some reason remains orphaned from cars while people are sent to crowded sand courts and sweat on an unnecessary night walk, and in the event waiters who do not know common sense Instead of opening all the gates. Dreamed. Lucky there's no virus circulating in the air, so it's not terrible that thousands of people are crammed into each other at entrances and exits. There's really nothing to talk about enforcing masks. Some of these people who bought tickets, booked a babysitter, left the house, got stuck in traffic jams and now have to wait another hour in the heat of August "because there are traffic jams", as if that's a surprise.

Luckily for the spectators, the artistic part of the event was at the highest level there is.

Even before the show began, it was understandable that the stage was unlike anything we had ever seen in shows of this kind.

The horizontal lighting towers were placed diagonally on the stage, while behind the band was a division of broken screens, which simultaneously displayed several different shooting angles.

It was everything but "normal."

It was incredibly complex, but in a simple way.

Just like Meir himself.

You don't need a doctorate in music to understand its depth, but you do have to be deaf not to understand that there is something special here.

Not all the artists in the show were able to express the raw emotion hidden between the words of the late Meir, but when it happened, it was special.

One can count several such great records: Arkady Duchin, Meir Banai's partner for the album and the show "Domino", performed "Etty's Night" from the album "Rain" while sitting on the piano, but actually playing the Miriam drum.

It was a bit of a weird picture, but Arkady managed to recreate the song and adapt it to its dimensions, as a kind of tribute to a friend who is not.

The "Jews" band performed their version of "With You in the World", which has long since become a staple in the band's performances.

It's amazing to see Orit Shahaf at 50 (yes, what the fucking you read, fifty!) Still ripping her throat in a song that was originally a silent ballad.

And again, how sucks that Titi was in total one of three women who got to sing at the show, alongside Leah Shabbat and Marina Maximilian.

One of the most powerful moments seen on stage in recent years.

Amir Dadon performs "Rain" (Photo: Shlomi Pinto)

Noam Banai, Meir's eldest son, performed "To the Rest" and for a moment you could feel Meir himself standing on stage. Something in Meir's very unique tone of voice, in his mimicry, in his small body movements. It's not an imitation or an inspiration, it's the real thing. Later, his cousin Ehud was invited, who performed "Never Alone" with Noam, and was left to perform a solo of "Say Fire Say Water", which was one of the best performances of the evening.

The big highlight of the show came just before the end, when Amir Dadon took the stage to perform "Rain". Dadon's authentic outcry in the chorus, which won a duet with 10,000 people, was one of the most powerful moments seen on stage in Israel in recent years. In an evening that included some exciting moments and fine performance, Dadon's number was one level above them all. Whoever was there, and saw the beautiful stage painted in pristine white during the heavenly supplication bequeathed by Banai to the world, could not help but shudder.

The show was signed by the younger brother Eviatar in a duet with his uncle Tessa for the classic "song of rubbed".

It was a good performance, for one of the songs most identified with the man we all gathered to pay homage to.

Too bad that as usual at live park shows, thousands have already started flocking to cars to avoid the traffic jams coming out of the parking lot.

How did a singer rubbed in that movie of Avi Nesher?

"Together, yes all together, yes go together to the light."

Who knew the reference was to the light in the parking lot.
