The Center for Experimentation and Road Safety of Argentina (CESVI) chose the safest cars marketed during 2020 in our market.

This choice, called "Safer Cars" is not based on crash tests, but rather recognizes those base models that offer the best price-safety ratio in their entry-level versions.

According to CESVI, the objective of these recognitions is to raise the safety standards of all the models that make up the Argentine automotive fleet.

With the Yaris hatchback and sedan, the Japanese brand was left with two categories and with the gold in safety.

How they are chosen

All the cars participated in the election, in their base version, and the restyling that have starred in improvements in terms of safety, launched between January and December 2020 and that were analyzed at the CESVI ARGENTINA Experimentation Workshop, where their safety was examined active, passive safety, structural behavior and driving assistance.

The score in each of these items determines the

Safety Index

, which is then linked to the sale value to finally determine the prize-winning price-safety ratio.

The Safety Index is a value that is expressed from

1 to 100.

It is established by evaluating the different systems and characteristics of the vehicle, with the weighting of

more than 160 items

and factors depending on the safety they provide to the occupants of a

vehicle.

vehicle.

It is important to note that vehicles must have at least 50 points in the Safety Index in order to be consecrated.

Winners

"Safer Cars" is divided into seven categories: cars (small and medium), SUV (compact and medium), pickups, "Excellence in Safety" and "Golden Car".

Toyota Yaris Sedan: Won in the "Midsize Car" category

-

Auto Chico:

 the big winner was the

Toyota Yaris Hatchback XS MT

, which also took the gold. "The model of the Japanese brand, which is manufactured in Brazil, was renewed last year, adding greater safety to the attributes they already had and they made it a best-seller.

It incorporated seven airbags for all its versions (no other model in its segment offers this number of airbags) and also has stability and traction control, hill start assistant and emergency braking.

The highest score in the Safety Index was received in its structural behavior, with 23.70 out of 30 possible points, since it offers good protection for adult occupants and children in the event of an impact.

-Medium Car

: The winner was the Toyota Yaris Sedan XS MT, which offers the same features as the hatch variant.

This model obtained a rating of four stars (out of five) in the crash tests carried out by Latin NCAP, the entity that measures the level of safety of all vehicles sold in Latin America, through crash tests.

Volkswagen Nivus.

The safest among compact SUVs

-Compact SUV

: The vehicle that stayed with this category was the

Volkswagen Nivus 200 TSI Comfortline

, also manufactured in Brazil and presented in our market in 2020.

This version has an outstanding level of safety equipment as standard, among which stand out four-wheel disc brakes, stability control and hill start assistant, six airbags (front and front side, and curtain). ), and anchors for child seats.

In its survey, CESVI clarifies that although Latin NCAP did not perform a high-speed crash test, it must be taken into account that T-Cross, Virtus and Polo, with whom it shares a platform, did obtain five stars in the crash tests, which which demonstrates the effectiveness of its structure, configured with special high-strength steels, to preserve the integrity of the passenger compartment.

Ford Territory.

The safest among midsize SUVs

-Medium SUV

: The winner was the

Ford Territory 1.5 T SEL

, the model that arrived last year from China to be located between EcoSport and Kuga, and which is characterized by both its active and passive safety equipment, as well as its structural reinforcements.

In terms of active safety, the base version has traction and stability controls, hill start assistant, and ABS complemented by Electronic Brake Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist.

In passive safety, it is equipped with six airbags (front, front side and curtain) that work in partnership with the restraint systems made up of five three-point inertial belts and the respective height-adjustable head restraints.

On a structural level, the Ford Territory offers maximum protection with a solid, high-resistance reinforced steel structure, which ensures the preservation of the cabin in the event of a collision.

Chevrolet S10.

The base version of the pickup made in Brazil was considered the best equipped in its category.

-

Pickup

: Some assumed that one of the national representatives could win it.

But no.

The winner was the

Chevrolet S10 2.8 TD 4x2 DC LS

, which was renewed last year with the great novelty of adding six airbags (front, front side and curtain) for all its versions.

Before they were exclusive to the top-of-the-range version.

Manufactured in Brazil, it also comes very well equipped by systems and assistants in charge of preventive safety, such as traction and stability controls, hill start assistant, trailer sway control and emergency braking.

Chevrolet engineers announced that the body is 20% stiffer by adding structural reinforcements, which increase occupant protection in the event of a collision.

Mercedes-Benz GLB.

Award for Excellence in Safety.

-Excellence in safety

: This category rewards the vehicle that achieves the highest Safety Index within the select group of those that exceed 80 points.

Like other years, the winning brand was Mercedes-Benz;

this time with the

GLB 250 4MATIC

SUV

, a seven-seat model that has it all in terms of protection: seven airbags (front and front side, curtain, and knee for the driver), stability and traction control, and ascent assistant. and descent, among others.

It also has an autonomous emergency brake and the Adaptive Break system, which assists those who drive in risky situations that may arise due to the state of the road or dangerous maneuvers.

In structural behavior it reached 29.40 out of 30 possible thanks to the strength of its structure, made up of aluminum and maximum resistance steels.

Its effectiveness in protecting occupants was proven in Euro NCAP crash tests, where it obtained the highest rating of five stars.
