Trailer for "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (Disney)

After what seems like the longest-awaited trailer in the history of Marvel movies, the first trailer for "Spider-Man: There's No Way Home" has finally landed today (Tuesday).

The third film in the friendly web-spinning plots in the current version, also appears to be the first film to “really” start the events of the fourth phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Lots of questions, lots of speculation - it's time to dive deep into the multiverse.

So where did we stop first?

Our last meeting with Spider-Man was in "Spider-Man: Away from Home" about two years ago - then as a film that locked the third stage of the cinematic universe. As you may recall, during the film, Peter Parker encounters Quentin Beck (Jake Jinhall), who presents himself as a hero from a parallel reality, and came to save our planet from the takeover of four destructive supernatural beings, representing the four elements: water, fire, Air and soil.

Later in the film it turns out that Beck is an impostor, who used his skills as an illusionist to deceive everyone and get his hands on an advanced artificial intelligence system from Stark Industries. The system makes it possible to control an entire unit of advanced skimmers, and so in the decisive battle of the film between Beck and Spider-Man, the latter takes over the skimmers and neutralizes them - but a stray shot by one of the skimmers hits Beck and kills him.

Just before his death he discovers that one of the skimmers contains documentation of one of the best kept secrets in the world: the true identity of Spider-Man.

Indeed, in the subtitle scene of the film, documentation of an engineered video was revealed in which Beck blames Spider-Man for his death, while revealing that behind the spider mask is high school student Peter Parker.

A whole universe of versions

Before we move on to the trailer itself, a methodical stop to mention the big story that will accompany us in the coming years in Marvel movies: The Multiverse. One of the most popular plot lines in Marvel comics depicts countless parallel realities, coexisting with ours. The scenarios we know from our reality differ in the parallel realities, from small nuances to a complete and dramatic change in the sequence of events. We’ve seen a taste of these already in “The Avengers: The End of the Game” as Doctor Strange examines scenarios in which Thanos does not win in the end (i.e. passes over countless parallel realities).

This is where the young and kicking brother of the cinematic universe, who was born very recently, comes into the picture. The Marvel series "Wendvision" and "Loki" dealt quite a bit with the whole issue of parallel realities, and so does the current animated series of Disney Plus, "What If". The plot of "WandaVision" will affect the expanded universe already in "Doctor Strange 2", and here we will save you the spoilers. What is nevertheless important to remember in the television context is what we learned during "Loki".

The villain of the series, known as the "Remaining Man" (but better known as Kang), actually reveals that different scientists from different realities have discovered in the past (i.e. actually in the future, that they are from the 31st century, on the other hand it has already happened. ) The existence of the multiverse, and as a result a tremendous inter-dimensional war broke out that ended in the creation of a new timeline.

The one we know today, and separates our reality from the myriad of parallel realities.

Kang himself, by the way, is not expected to appear in the film, and will probably not be hurt until "Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania," which is slated to be released in 2023.

At the same time, he is indeed expected to be the great villain, pulling the strings parallel to Thanos of the previous round.

Remember them?

So far long and necessary introductions, and hence to the trailer itself, which according to everything we know from Marvel movies, mostly represents the first part of the film. Apparently, he is about to start from the point where he ended up "far from home" with Peter, who is under investigation following the murder of Mysterio and at the same time his identity is exposed to the eyes of all. The new reality affects not only him but also his relatives and loved ones, most notably Aunt Mae (Marissa Toomey), his good friend Ned (Jacob Batlon) and his lover Mary Jane Watson, or MJ (Zendaya).

Losing advice about the lack of privacy he loved so much, he turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks him to perform a spell that will bring him back to his anonymity.

At the last minute, Parker realizes that his request will lead his lovers to forget who he is, and his remorse confuses Strange and leads to error.

How serious the mistake will be revealed during the film, but from the events in the trailer it is already clear that Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 in 2004, Electro (Jamie Foxx) from Mark Webb's Marvelous Spider-Man 2 ' 2014 and the Green Goblin (Willem Defoe) from the same film will hit here.

They all, seemingly, found their deaths in the original films, but the disruption in the space-time space created by the spell gives them an unexpected second chance.

Are these all the villains who will face Parker in the upcoming film? We have no answers to this at this time. One of the popular hypotheses among fans is that Spider-Man is expected to face the Evil Six ("Sinister Six"), a bunch of super villains (which includes in addition to the three already mentioned, also the Eagle - the villain of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" - Mysterio and Craven). But that is of course not all. If the villains can move between dimensions and realities, so can the heroes. Hence the great expectation that the film will feature a summit meeting between different versions of Spider-Man, including the popular and up-to-date one by Miles Morales.

The connection of all this potential underscores how great the film is going to be, not only in terms of the extent of its impact on the sequel, but also in terms of Marvel itself.

After two years of a plague that brought the film industry to its knees, Marvel is begging for a huge movie that will finally bring back the hype and also the huge revenue to theaters.

As long as new and familiar variants do not spoil the celebration, "Spider-Man: There's No Way Home" is supposed to feature a huge mix of characters, happenings and exploding moments - one we've only gotten used to so far in Avengers movies.

The mouse against the wizard

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" is based in part on a controversial comic book called "One More Day." The plot features Spider-Man making a deal with Mephisto (the devil character in the Marvel universe), after revealing his identity to the public led to the assassination of Aunt May. As part of the deal, Mephisto brings Mae back to life, but in return he returns to a reality in which he and Mary Jane never married. Is this price also related to the name of the film in one way or another?

For Peter, after the spell there really is no other way home, in the sense of the house he knew and loved - the one in which only his loved ones knew his secret identity. In the sense of the other characters, especially the villains, this is a unique opportunity to change their destiny by defeating Spider-Man in a parallel reality. Going home means death for them. There is no doubt that Marvel will play here on the concept of the deal with the devil.

Another thing that can be learned from the trailer is that if all the other troubles were not enough, Spider-Man will also have to deal with the power of Strange himself.

The trailer features the sorcerer who ignores Master Wong's warning (Benedict Wong) and performs the complex spell, even though he recognizes the great risk that may result from it.

The reason for Strange's arrogance also needs some context.

The events of the film take place not long after "The Avengers: The End of the Game", when Strange is carried on the waves of success of the great victory over Thanos.

Arrogance is not a foreign matter to this character, but the consequences seem to make him very sorry for what he did.

In one of the moments in the trailer, Strange is seen separating Spider-Man's spiritual being from the physical one, as well as a train chase scene.

And after all that: Take everything in doubt

Marvel has proven many times before that it knows how to play well with the fans' heads, especially when it knows exactly which buttons to press to produce the big hype around such trailers.

It is possible that what we saw in the first glimpse is out of context, it is possible that some of the sections were created solely for the benefit of the trailer itself.

"Spider-Man: There's No Way Home" will be a great and very influential film, with anticipation for some moments we have yet to see in this genre.

We will only discover the true meanings when the film finally hits theaters on December 16th.
