A little more than an intermediate device: we tested the Poco X3 GT

At a price tag of NIS 1,499, the Chinese manufacturer's new smartphone comes with a display at a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a cooling system and a battery with a capacity of 5,000 mAh.

However, it has some drawbacks, for example an LCD screen, but in the end it is a great value for the price.

Poco, Shiomi's discounted sub-brand, managed to drive the cellular market crazy in 2018 with the Poco F1 model that offered the power of a powerful flagship smartphone at an extremely low price tag.

Since then, the company has failed to replicate the achievement, and in January 2020 the company announced that the brand was embarking on a kind of independent path.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to conquer the local market, the company launched a new device in Israel about two weeks ago - the Poco X3 GT, which, like its predecessors, promises advanced specifications alongside a low price tag compared to competitors.

Is it worth the money?

We checked.

"Only" LCD, but not sure you will notice the difference

Foucault has incorporated in the X3 GT a 6.6-inch screen that actually looks great.

True, this is "only" an IPS LCD panel that offers a high refresh rate of 120 Hz, but I had no problem reading any content on it even in daylight, and really a pleasure to see any content on it with its display and fairly accurate colors.

The company did not invest too much in the design of the device and it is a bit reminiscent of the Mi 11 devices of the parent company Shiomi.

At the back you can find a plastic back, the frame around the device is also made of plastic, and its edges, as well as the connections between it and the back and the screen glass, are slightly rounded so that the device is comfortable to hold in the hand.

The weight of the X3 GT is relatively reasonable - 193 grams.

This means it can be felt well in the hand, but it still does not interfere when it is in the pocket and does not feel too heavy during use.

In addition, there is no headphone jack here, but Foucault has included an adapter in the kit - something I had not encountered in devices without a headphone jack for several good years.

Not getting tired, but there is also a minus

In terms of hardware, you get a smartphone that has a hard time stuttering.

The device combines a MediaTek Dimensity 1100 chip, an Arm Mali G77 MC9 graphics processor, along with 8GB of working memory, 128 or 256GB of internal storage and NFC connectivity.

In practice, the use of the device interface was smooth, with a few pauses here and there, but it was completely forgivable.

Also, we did not encounter slow games (even relatively heavy ones), switching between apps, flipping through apps and watching movies or surfing the web.

The X3 GT also features the LiquidCool cooling system that reduces CPU heat - which apparently also helped maintain a reasonable temperature during our use.

In addition, you can also find a battery with a relatively large capacity of 5,000 mAh that is charged with a high power of 67 watts in TurboCharge technology, which is capable of charging from 0 to 100% in 42 minutes.

The sucks part: lack of support for wireless charging (Photo: Walla! Technology, Yinon Ben-Shoshan)

The part that sucks about the device, however, is the lack of support for wireless charging.

The year is 2021, and it is a fairly basic feature so that cellular manufacturers should stop compromising and integrate the technology also in devices intended for the intermediate market.

Also, the fingerprint sensor is located in the lock button, but it made me press it quite a few times while holding the device in my hand - which is a very annoying thing - on the other hand, it responded well.

Camera

One of the most important components nowadays in buying a new smartphone is of course its camera.

The X3 GT's camera array includes three sensors, including a 64-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel secondary sensor for 120-degree wide-angle photography, and a third 2-megapixel lens for macro photography.

The front-facing camera (selfie) comes in 16-megapixel quality.

Our general impression is that the camera provides great photos.

Is she great?

No.

In daylight the images come out clear - but with slightly less accurate colors compared to what you would get in flagship devices.

However, the resulting images are quite sharp, with high detail without smears - even when shooting inside a building in less ideal lighting conditions.

Note: In order to start shooting at the highest quality - 64 megapixels, you will need to select this option in the camera settings.

On the other hand, you will not find in the interface - which looks the same as the one that exists in Shiomi devices - an option for optical zoom and you will have to settle for a double digital zoom2.

Bottom line

For those who need a better camera or high quality screen - I would recommend skipping on to more expensive smartphones.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a smartphone with a huge battery, fast charging and quite good performance for everyday use and even beyond - the POCO X3 GT may be a great choice for you.
