Confusion in the metropolises: Hamburg's main train station has been called »Paderborn« for two days on Google Maps. This sometimes leads to absurd route planning.

In three minutes from Jungfernstieg to Paderborn - according to Google Maps, this is currently possible with the S-Bahn without any problems.

A curious mistake is currently ensuring that Hamburg Central Station is currently displayed as "Paderborn" in the app of many users.

The group is still working to correct the mistake.

The error does not only affect the map view - the name has also been changed in the route maps of the public name traffic integrated in Google Maps. According to Google, the Hamburg S-Bahn line 3 leads from the Reeperbahn via Jungfernstieg directly to Paderborn.

Upon request, the company could not explain how the strange mix-up could come about. "Basically, the data in Google Maps comes from a variety of sources," explains a spokeswoman for SPIEGEL. These include commercial data companies, publicly available sources and, in some cases, partners such as local government agencies. According to the company, it is unclear where exactly the misinformation in Google Maps came from or through whom. The error has obviously dug deep into the system. While the main station is correctly labeled in the browser version, the app version continues to display the error - and has been for two days. As SPIEGEL confirmed, the problem existed in the app version on both Monday and Tuesday.

If you search for the term “Paderborn Hauptbahnhof” or “Paderborn Hbf” in the app, you will always see the real train station in the North Rhine-Westphalian city.

In Google Maps, curious routes from Paderborn Hbf to “Paderborn” - that is, Hamburg's main station - can be created that, according to Google, take more than three hours with Deutsche Bahn.

While no further consequences are known in the current case, errors in Google Maps cause annoyance again and again.

The demarcation of the boundaries in the program used around the world is sometimes a political issue that leads governments to put pressure on the Internet company.

In 2017, a Norwegian village was surprised by an enormous influx of tourists because Google had relocated a viewpoint 30 kilometers away.
