IAA Mobility 2021: An overview of the most important new automobiles

2021-09-03T13:04:43.524Z

An IAA with almost no cars with combustion engines - who would have expected that a few years ago? At the trade fair, Mercedes, VW, BMW and Co. rely entirely on electric. But there are also exciting new manufacturers.

The car world is changing rapidly - this is also shown by a look at the world premieres of this IAA Mobility 2021. At the trade fair in Munich (September 7th to 12th), almost exclusively fully electric cars will be unveiled.

There are the sedans Mercedes EQE and BMW i4, the SUV models BMW iX, Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and VW ID.5, the compact car Renault Mégane E-Tech.

There are also alternative vehicle concepts such as the Swiss Microlino urban mobile with a retro look.

The IAA is thus reflecting a trend.

Around 1.7 million battery-electric cars were sold worldwide in the first half of 2021.

For the year as a whole, the industry expects e-car sales of around 3.3 million models.

Sales are increasing, but e-cars are still clearly in the minority: In good years, the industry sells a total of around 90 million vehicles a year.

Despite the technological upheaval, however, interest in the IAA is falling.

The number of visitors has decreased at previous trade fairs.

This year, the disinterest of numerous manufacturers can already be clearly seen - they are staying away from the industry get-together in the motherland of the automobile.

Many rejections cloud the mood

This year this applies to all Japanese brands, and it applies to the Stellantis Group, to which traditional car manufacturers such as Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Jeep belong.

In addition, Tesla and luxury brands such as Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini and Ferrari are missing.

Their stands used to be surrounded by crowds of visitors.

Some absent manufacturers would have had something to show. Opel, for example, presented the new, sixth generation of the Astra compact car just a few days ago - at the company's headquarters in Rüsselsheim. The Tesla Model Y, which was recently presented in Berlin, could have been a car highlight at the IAA. Despite all the cancellations, there are more than a dozen new car models on the show stages in Munich. Here is the overview:
