A 30-year-old man, known to the police and justice, was seriously injured by gunshot on Monday morning in Lucciana, Haute-Corse.
An investigation for an attempted murder in an organized gang was opened by the Bastia prosecutor.
"Around 10:50 am, he was leaving his residence by car when he was attacked by several armed men who opened fire on him," said a source close to the case.
The man, "seriously injured" by a "bullet in the face", was evacuated to the Bastia hospital in a condition deemed "serious", said the emergency services.
He was then transferred to the Nice hospital, according to corroborating sources.
An investigation opened for "attempted murder in an organized gang" was opened and entrusted in co-referral to the judicial police and the research section, said in a statement the prosecutor of the Republic of Bastia, Arnaud Viornery.
Already convicted of criminal association
The man was followed by the judicial police and the research section of the gendarmerie in several cases including one directed by the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille in charge of organized crime cases in which he is suspected of criminal association, said a source close to the matter.

He was sentenced in July 2015 by the Marseille Criminal Court, for participation in a criminal association with a view to drug trafficking and carrying weapons and ammunition, to three years in prison in a drug trafficking case. and weapons in the bunkers of the former SNCM shipping company.
This traffic was directed, in Corsica, by a team of criminals known as the Master Café, in reference to a bar in Lucciana where the criminals met. Some 80,000 euros in cash, a kilo of cocaine, firearms and ammunition had been found during searches.
