Belmondo has starred in art films, but also in more commercial hits and genre films, such as "The Brain" and "The Professional," and never stopped working between the 1960s and 1990s.
His career waned over time, and his most notable film of the 1990s was Claude Lalouche's version of "Poor Life."
In 2011 he had a stroke and took a break from cinema until he returned in 2009 with "Man and His Dog," which was recorded in history as his last film.
Belmondo continued to be an icon even when he retired, and will likely remain so forever.
He was also recently mentioned in Quentin Tarantino's Times in Hollywood, where he is mentioned as one of the protagonist's idols.
