The US is not getting a grip on the coronavirus, despite all the efforts of President Joe Biden's administration.

At the end of the summer, the hospitals fill up with corona patients again, only just over 50 percent of the population are fully vaccinated.

Now the virologist and presidential advisor Anthony Fauci has commented on the situation in the country.

"The virus is nowhere near under control and thus continues to pose a threat to public health," Fauci told Axios.

"We are currently still in pandemic mode because we detect 160,000 new infections a day."

In particular, the impulse in individual states to relax the corona regulations as quickly as possible meets with incomprehension among the virologist: »In a country of this size, you can't have 100,000 cases a day.

In order to feel reasonably well, we have to get well below 10,000 a day. «That was not even possible in June, when the USA was able to report an all-time low in new infections.

But even then there were more than 11,000 new infections a day.

The situation in hospitals in particular is currently deteriorating noticeably.

The number of patients who have to be hospitalized for Covid 19 disease is increasing - and has now reached a level that is almost four times as high as it was a year ago.

That comes from data from the Johns Hopkins University, about which the British "Guardian" reported.

The number of deaths had also increased by 86 percent in 2020 compared to the same period.

More severe courses - and worries about Labor Day

A closer look at the university's data shows that the number of difficult courses is also increasing.

While almost 10,400 Covid patients were treated in the intensive care units of the hospitals in the week between September 7 and 13, 2020, this week there are more than 25,300 people who had to receive intensive care - more than twice as many.

And the situation could get worse: on September 6, Labor Day took place in the USA, a national holiday.

According to the US traffic safety authority, there were more than 3.5 million people in the US on Friday and Saturday alone.

It is to be expected that further contagions will result from this travel movement.
