Agnès Buzyn in court

The former French Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn, who had resigned in mid-February 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 epidemic, arrived Friday at the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) in Paris which is investigating the government management of the health crisis since July 2020. The questioning of Agnès Buzyn, who can be indicted or emerge under the more favorable status of assisted witness, would be the first in this vast dossier devoted to the way in which the authorities French people anticipated and then managed the coronavirus epidemic which killed at least 115,000 people in France.

Collective immunity is illusory, according to the WHO

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe Hans Kluge was more pessimistic on Friday about the ability of a high vaccination rate to stop the pandemic on its own, because of the variants that reduced the prospect of collective immunity.

According to epidemiologists, it now seems illusory to achieve collective immunity only through vaccines, but these remain crucial to contain the pandemic.

The epidemic has peaked in Polynesia

The Covid-19 epidemic has peaked in French Polynesia, with a drop in the number of hospitalizations, even if the situation remains

"serious"

because the intensive care units are still saturated, said High Commissioner Dominique Sorain on Thursday (Friday in Paris).

Thursday, 303 people were hospitalized in Polynesia, including 57 in intensive care, and 538 people had died since the start of the health crisis in the territory.

The situation

"is still serious because we still have hospitals, health centers, which are saturated,"

the High Commissioner told reporters during a visit to the hospital on the island of Moorea, facing Tahiti.

"If there is a drop in the number of hospitalizations"

, with about

"a quarter less hospitalization"

than ten days ago, the people

"who come to the hospital are more in more sick ",

and

" many are in intensive care unit "

, he explained.

Los Angeles Makes Vaccine Mandatory for Students 12 and Older

The Los Angeles school district, the second largest in the United States, decided Thursday to require all students aged 12 and over to be vaccinated against Covid-19 if they wish to attend a public school.

This vote by district officials, which has some 600,000 students in total, concerns about 220,000 of them eligible for vaccination, a first on such a scale in the country.

It comes as President Joe Biden has announced that he is making vaccination mandatory for about two-thirds of American workers, including federal employees and employees of companies with more than 100 people.

European states impacted unequally

The health crisis has affected European states very unevenly, and successive lockdowns have been particularly destructive for the service sector.

However, this sector often employs

"an abundant unskilled labor force"

, which could lead to an increase in

"inequalities and (of) poverty"

within Europe, says the OECD in a report.

More than 4.60 million dead

The Covid-19 pandemic has killed at least 4,602,565 people around the world since the end of December 2019, according to a report established on Friday at 10:00 GMT by AFP from official sources.

The United States is the country with the most deaths (654,598), ahead of Brazil (585,174), India (442,009), Mexico (266,150) and Peru (198,621), according to official figures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, that the toll of the pandemic could be two to three times higher.
