For the majority of motorists, a speed limit on motorways should not be a problem: According to a new study, more than three quarters of people drive slower than 130 kilometers per hour anyway.

The argument against a speed limit on German autobahns is often that it is an interference with the personal freedom of drivers.

Apparently, however, only a small proportion of people even feel the need to rush through the streets at a speed of more than 130 kilometers per hour.

That is the result of an analysis by the employer-related Institute of the German Economy (IW) in Cologne.

According to the institute, experts evaluated real-time data from motorway sections without a speed limit for the survey.

The data comes from automated motorway counting stations in North Rhine-Westphalia, from the period from mid-May to the end of August.

A total of 1.2 billion car movements were included in the analysis.

Less than two percent drive faster than 160 km / h

This shows: Even without a speed limit, 77 percent of motorists drive slower than 130 km / h on the motorways. Twelve percent drove at a speed between 130 and 140 kilometers per hour. Nine percent based themselves on a speed between 140 and 160 kilometers per hour. According to the study, less than two percent of drivers traveled at more than 160 kilometers per hour.

The authors themselves see the results of the analysis as evidence that a general speed limit would have little effect on CO₂ emissions in traffic and the number of serious accidents - because many people stayed below the speed limit anyway.

Conversely, it seems conceivable that the resistance from the population to a speed limit could be lower than previously assumed - because the change would not be that great for many.

In the election campaign, the SPD, the Greens and the Left are calling for a speed limit on motorways.

Union, FDP and AfD reject this.

The time of day is also decisive for the speed that can be measured on the motorways. According to the IW, most high-speed drivers are out and about at night. Between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., four percent of drivers are traveling at least 160 kilometers per hour. Between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., only around one percent of drivers drive that fast. From 7 p.m. onwards, the proportion of fast drivers increases significantly, but remains small overall.
