Apple released a software update for all of its operating systems (iOS, MacOS and WatchOS) last night (Tuesday) to block the loophole used by NSO's Israeli spyware "Pegasus".

It should be mentioned that the spyware program "Pegasus" made by the company in Herzliya, recently made headlines due to international journalistic exposure, claiming that the software was used to spy on political figures and opponents of regimes, human rights activists and journalists.

The uniqueness of "Pegasus" is its ability to be implanted in the device in a hidden way, without the user's knowledge at all and without any need for action on his part (what is known in professional parlance as zero-click).

The update released by Apple tonight, blocks this option, and the recommendation is to install it without delay.

The Canadian organization Citizen Lab, which monitors the activities of NSO and the illegal uses made with the help of "Pegasus", said that the malware exploits a bug in the graphical system of the device.

They were able to locate exactly the behavior, after recovering infected files from the phone of an activist infected with the software.

Apparently, these were GIF files (old and familiar image files) that were attached to SMS messages, but were actually more complex files.

Apple in its announcement also thanked Citizen Lab for "completing the difficult task of achieving a vulnerability example".

The company has already released a similar update last July.

Apple wrote on the official website: "Apple is aware of a report that this problem may have been actively exploited and has given access to the core of the system."

The update is available for iPhone 6s and above, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 or later, iPad 5th generation or later, iPad mini 4 or later and iPod touch (7th generation).
