Canadian comedian Norm McDonald passed away today (Tuesday) at the age of 61, after a nine-year battle with cancer, the Deadline website reports.

McDonald was known for his dry comedy style, and became famous mainly for the years he was part of the "Starday Night Live" cast between 1993 and 1998, including directing "Weekend Update."

McDonald is considered one of the most influential and beloved actors in the history of the show, and is especially loved by fellow comedians.

Among other things, he has been a regular guest on the shows of David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jerry Seinfeld and many others.
