The local cinema market is currently in a strange, almost unprecedented period of twilight: on the one hand, the theaters have been open since the beginning of last June. On the other hand, the situation is not quite as it was yesterday. Corona damage is still noticeable, and the crowd has not returned in numbers that were before the plague.

As a result, the market is working - but on a small fire. Distributors are in no hurry to use equal merchandise waiting on the shelf, preferring to operate on a small fire, with relatively low-profile films. For example, "How to Be a Good Wife" which came out last week, or "Winning Horse" which comes out this week, and is a classic example of a film that deserves three stars, a likable but non-binding score.

The film is based on events that took place in Wells about twenty years ago, and have already been immortalized in a documentary called "Dark Horse". The scene takes place in Cape Town, a tiny town even on the scale of the tiny country, and the cashier and barmaid protagonist named Jen, who is looking for a way to shed some light on her and the locals' gray lives.

To do this, she decides to fulfill a dream: to nurture a racehorse and make him a champion on the track.

The costs, of course, are expensive, so she is required to pick up a crowdfunding project, in which her friends and neighbors are partners.

Over time, as is easy to guess, it will turn out that the investment pays off.

The film turns out to be a combination of two different genres. The first, of course, is one of the oldest and most common genres in Hollywood - the sports film, which describes how an underdog becomes a winning horse. The second, whose beginnings can be marked in the 1990s with "go all the way", has no official name. You could call it "The British Blue Collar Comedy." Its protagonists are unemployed or working-class Britons, who find surprising ways to transcend their distress, for example dancing or being photographed naked, or in this case - nurturing a racehorse.

These hits are gaining in popularity because of the human and optimistic message they contain, and also because we all, including myself of course, are lured by British accents of various kinds. In "Winning Horse" there is plenty of both.

The film was directed by Euros Lynn, a Welsh TV man who has so far focused mainly on television work, and among other things was behind one episode of "Sherlock" and one episode of "Black Mirror". He is a skilled craftsman,And it is better to use here the conventions of the sports film effectively.

A classic three star movie.

Still, if "Winning Horse" had taken place in New England or even London, it probably wouldn't have been particularly interesting.

What adds color and interest to it is the location in a Welsh town that is usually so far from the spotlight.

The film manages to give a sense of time and place, and present us with a unique piece of life, which has its own language, customs and character.

More often than not, in horse movies, horseshoe bumps easily transcend boring humans.

Here, the human figures are colorful and full of flesh.

The qualities of the game's displays also contribute to this.

"Winning Horse" features several actors and actresses who are basically half a floor above the level of the routine script, pulling it upwards.

This is mainly the Australian Tony Colette in the lead role, and alongside her is Damien Lewis, who is mostly remembered from "Homeland", and although he was born in London, here he connects to the Welsh roots of his family.

He deserves a trophy for using Manic Street Preachers.

To add a little more pepper to the haystack in front of us, "Winning Horse" uses the best of Welsh music - from Tom Jones to Manic Street Preachers.

These form the basis of karaoke scenes, which are revealed as the real highlights of this comedic drama, adding to it a graceful humor, charm, emotion and also a bit of originality.

So while the film looks on the face of it as completely routine, and yet it has something surprising in it.

We set out in search of donkeys and horses, and found public singing of Welsh hits.

"Winning Horse" will not win any race for an important film award - but anyone who watches it will come out with a small smile.
