Shots resounded in the middle of the night from Wednesday to Thursday in Ambleteuse, a commune in the Côte-d'Opale located in the Pas-de-Calais.
A man opened fire on police officers who responded and shot him dead, the Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor's office said on Thursday.
No police were injured but the perpetrator of the shots against them was admitted to hospital with a “reserved” life-threatening prognosis.
The exchanges of gunfire took place shortly after 2 a.m., along the Ambleteuse dyke.
Three police officers from the Lens police station on a surveillance mission were driving around when they were "approached by an individual, on foot, who took out a handgun and opened fire in their direction", relates the prosecution. .

In response, the police used their service weapons and fired six times, adds the prosecution.
"The weapon has been seized," said the prosecutor.

Hit by four bullets in the legs, abdomen and thorax, the defendant was immediately hospitalized with a “reserved” vital prognosis, the prosecution said.
Aged 20, this young man living in Ambleteuse, is already known to the courts for acts of violence on the ascendant.
