No matter if the motive is increasing requirements for air pollution, the desire to present improved fuel consumption, customers seeking better performance, advanced safety or gleaming comfort equipment in the showroom - Generation Generation presents the car industry leaps forward that improve new cars through the use of advanced technology.

But there is one place where this whole story comes back to us consumers in reverse - when the car starts to age.

Its value as used is already half or a third of its value as new, but the price of the treatments and replacements - it has no impairment.

These are the five car systems that look great on new cars, but if you are looking for the simple and durable used that will leave you more money in your pocket - you should avoid them at all costs.

You will not have the most advanced, fast and economical car on the street, but your peace of mind also comes at a price.

Turbochargers: Lots of power, but require careful maintenance (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

Turbocharged engines

Hahaha, turbo magic, this magic word that was once reserved for performance dripping sports cars is today a very common component in new cars.

The reason is simple, the use of turbochargers make it possible to prevent a relatively modest volume to produce very high powers and present very good fuel consumption.

By and large, the use of turobchargers means that the increased power supply comes only under load, while in normal driving the car maintains moderate fuel consumption and the horses arrive only on demand.

But alongside these benefits of better fuel consumption and improved performance, the turbocharger comes at a very heavy price in routine maintenance.

The turbo unit itself operates at tremendous loads, the rotational speed of the turbines can range from a few tens of thousands of revolutions per minute at idle and up to 250,000 rpm under load. Add to that the tremendous pressures it operates, the high temperatures prevailing in its area By exhaust gases) and more - all of which say a simple thing - this business requires careful treatment and awareness.Especially when it comes to its lubrication, lubrication is usually done by using engine oil and since the supercharger is in the vast majority of cases at the top, it is the last to be lubricated at the beginning of use And the first to stop accepting it at the end of a trip.

Renovation price ranges from NIS 1,000 to NIS 3,000, new ones already reach NIS 7,000 and up (Photo: Nir Ben Tovim, Rami Gilboa)

And despite the advances in turbo assemblies and the improvement in their lubrication systems, their longevity is directly derived from their level of maintenance. Beyond the need to use the specific oil required by the manufacturer, the manner in which the car is used determines its lifespan. This means that a moderate start to the journey and a wait of between one minute and even 5 minutes at the end of a strenuous ride when the engine at idle is idle to allow the supercharger to slow down the speed while lubricating it. But also for the "boiling" of the oil that remains in the lubrication lines of the supercharger and damage to it.

And when it comes to repairing or replacing a supercharger? Amounts in worlds of NIS 4,000 and these easily add up to NIS 10,000 and up north in a private car and even NIS 20,000 in commercial cars.

Stop-Travel system: does not save money, at least not for you (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

Stop-go systems

Standing engine bleeding systems, also known as start-stop, are not a very new technology, but one that is becoming more and more common in new vehicles along and across the various segments.

The idea behind these systems is simple - bleed the car engine while standing in order to save fuel and reduce pollutant emissions.

I currently put aside the inconvenience in these systems when it comes to using the car in the summer months, so when standing the car turns off the air conditioning system, as some cars use auxiliary batteries to extend the time periods of operating these systems.

The claim that these systems are useful in reducing pollutant emissions is not baseless, but when it comes to saving fuel - that they will not work on you, these are fractions of a percentage to a few percent at most.

So why all this hassle if it does not save you fuel?

Because it saves manufacturers a lot of money, by multiplying the emissions of pollutants and fuel consumption from their cars in light of the devices they have to meet, these systems allow them to "disguise" the real numbers and save them a lot of money.

It is impossible to escape them (Photo: Keinan Cohen, PR)

But if they just did not save fuel, Dayano, if they would save you some money on fuel, Dayano.

But the problem is that they cost you and expensive.

The reason is the need to use a certain type of batteries in these cars, EGM batteries or "deep discharge batteries" whose price may be double and even three times the price of a quality battery for a car not equipped with this system, or in numbers: instead of 450 to 650 shekels for a standard quality battery. Between 730 and 1,200 shekels and more for one that fits a car with stop-and-go systems.

The bad news: even if you try to get smart and install a standard battery in a place designed for a car with a stop-and-go system, you will at best have to replace it frequently due to its incompatibility with vehicle systems, at worst the peripheral power systems can be damaged. .

Low-cut tires on a large rim: look good in the showroom, will knock you the rest of the time (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Large hoops

They look good in the showroom, they give the car a sporty look and make the wheels fill the wheelhouses more impressively than smaller ones - but the epidemic of giant rims, one of the sandy evils of the last decade and a half continues to rage and knock down spaces.

In fact, except for the aesthetic aspect and for those who really, really will dive into the depths of things - so even less unbounced weight and weight in general, large rims with low-cut tires have no advantage. In fact they are a very long list of troubles just waiting to knock you out.

They require extreme care for tire pressures, severely impair ride comfort and noise attenuation, are susceptible to damage to the curved sidewall, and make the rim itself susceptible to scratches, abrasions and noises.

But the highlight, oh the highlight - when you come to change tires and find that the high-quality ones that fit 18, 19 or 20-inch rims will grind your wallet.

You can of course also go for the Chinese alternative (although the supply is limited in these sizes) - but there is nothing like seeing a "luxury" rim with rubber from the famed tire maker "Qing Long".

Safety systems located in the windshield are less vulnerable and prone to damage (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

Radars and cameras

We are in favor of advanced safety systems, completely in favor and without any restrictions. Admittedly, they are still far from constituting some sort of insurance certificate from front-to-rear accidents and they are all still defined as assistance systems and are at different maturity levels.

But just as their level of reliability and performance are different, so are the different methods these systems use to produce the contract regarding what happens up front, or in other words - “see” the way. But one thing they all have in common - if they get hit hard enough you are at best looking at a very expensive repair and at worst a safety system that may save you from an accident.

In general, the positions of the sensing means of these systems (radar, camera, radar) can be divided into two.

Those installed at the top of the windshield and those that are on the grille of the car.

Some are located behind the symbol, or in a kind of plastic rectangle in the center of the grill.

The problem with these components is that they are most likely to be "snatched" if an SUV with a towing hook kisses them during a parking maneuver, an animal injury, an object flying on the road or a rear-end accident that the system did not prevent (some only operate at certain speed ranges).

Dual clutch gearbox.

The performance is excellent but the mechanical robustness is not there yet (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

Double clutch boxes

Of course if it is a desire to save, our automatic recommendation will be on a manual box (12 points on the pun ...), but since within our people we sit, and recognize that manual cars are not exactly a big attraction in the Israeli car market - most people will probably buy Automatic car.

In the world of automatic transmissions, too, the automotive industry is divided into three types - planetary automatic transmissions (to be called standard), continuous transmissions (CVT) and dual-clutch gearboxes.

And while the first two have been with the car industry for six decades or more, the latter are about 20 years old (they made their 2003 debut at Volkswagen).

In practice they are the perfect solution that combines the efficiency in the power transfer of a manual gearbox, the convenience of an automatic gearbox and also adds exceptional agility of action - all this beauty has a price.

This price is the technological complexity and the fact that they are still far from offering the mechanical resilience of planetary automatic transmissions, which are not fault-tolerant, and require refurbishment at some point - but with reality indisputable - are far superior in terms of dual-clutch durability.

So they may save you time on better performance and money on fuel - but it could very well be that you also spend the same time and money on their expensive replacement and repair.
