Recordings from the weekend on La Palma: Magma blocks, as large as three-story buildings, slide with the lava over the island.
The up to 1.5 kilometers wide and up to 1200 degrees hot lava flow destroyed the last buildings in the village of Todoque on Sunday.
This cement plant was also flattened by the glowing volcanic rock.
The islanders can only watch powerlessly:
Jose Roberto Sanchez, resident: »My land in Todoque is gone, the memories of my parents, my legacy there, nothing is left. I want it to stop and not destroy anything anymore. But that's impossible, no matter how much you ask, it won't stop. That is nature, we have to wait and see.
«
Patricia Davila, dance teacher: »I didn't expect it, although they told us about it at school. As children, we learned a lot about the place we live and what could happen to us. It's amazing because you don't know what's going to happen, but that's how it is: we live on a volcanic island.
«
This is also reminiscent of small to medium-sized earthquakes that shake the south of the island with a strength of up to 4.1.
Breathe a sigh of relief at the airport: It opened again on Saturday after the air quality measured at the volcano had improved.
However, airlines are advised to add additional fuel.
It could happen at any time that the machines have to stay in the air longer because of fresh ash on the runways of La Palma.
