Drive a 1000 horsepower Ferrari spider, the most powerful open-air car of the Maranello company ever, and at the same time have a fully electric car capable of driving about 25 km in electric mode. It is the SF90 Spider, the convertible version of the SF90 Stradale, which was the protagonist of a media drive along the roads of the Modena hills. The SF90 Spider is a plug-in hybrid car, in series production, powered by the 3990 cm3 V8 biturbo endothermic engine, the multi-award winning engine with the International Engine & Powertrain of the Year, which delivers 780 horsepower flanked by 3 electric motors, one at the rear placed between the thermal engine and the gearbox and the other two on the front axle that provide another 220 horsepower.

Despite the 1000 horsepower that can inspire fear, the Maranello engineers have ensured that the great refinement of this system does not involve complications for the driver as a sophisticated control system independently supervises the management of energy flows based on the conditions of use. .

And we were able to check this for ourselves during the test drive, conditioned by a typically autumn day, along the hilly roads surrounding Maranello.

With the SF90 Spider, a feeling was created right from the start that gave us safety and driving pleasure. Once in the car, the driver just has to set one of the modes of use of the power unit: eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, Qualify, which can be selected via the new touch-sensitive eManettino, located on the left of the steering wheel, to be combined with the classic management of driving controls. (the Manettino placed on the right of the steering wheel). In particular, in the eDrive mode the thermal engine is off and the traction is entrusted to the electric front axle and it is possible to travel up to 25 km with battery reaching a limited speed of 135km / h. In Hybrid mode, the one we selected during our test drive, will decide the control logic whether to turn the heat engine on or off from time to time. And it was really curious, when crossing the inhabited centers, to see the amazement of the people at the passage of the Ferrari in completely silent mode, it passed almost unnoticed if it were not for the beautiful space shuttle line designed by the Ferrari Style Center directed by Flavio Manzoni . But, once out of the inhabited centers, it was enough to increase the speed a little to hear the roar of the Red, famous all over the world. On the other hand, when you switch to Performance mode, the heat engine is always kept on and battery charge maintenance is preferred over efficiency in order to ensure full power availability. This function can be particularly convenient when you need to recharge the battery without having to use the column. Finally, the Qualify mode allows you to reach 1000 hp of maximum system power as even the electric motors are allowed to work at their maximum power.

Like the SF90 Stradale, the SF90 Spider is also equipped with on-demand all-wheel drive, a first for the Maranello sports cars that allows the car to become the new reference for standing start: 0-100km / h in 2.5 seconds and 0-200km / h in 7 seconds. The maximum speed of 340 km / h is also very important. Supercar performance thanks also to the new front axle with two independent electric motors that allows you to give the right level of torque and power for each individual wheel at all times and therefore allows the car to have an insertion, a distance and an exit of corners that have no comparison with other Ferrari cars, giving the driver a sense of great safety. With a car that is a concentrate of technology, the efforts of the engineers also focused on the cockpit. The steering wheel is equipped with touch controls, which allow you to control every aspect of the car with your two thumbs, while the navigator is front-facing. There is also the head up display that collects the main information useful in driving. All this to follow the philosophy so dear to Maranello 'eyes on the road, hands on the wheel', to maintain maximum control of the car without distractions.to maintain maximum control of the car without distractions.to maintain maximum control of the car without distractions.

The SF90 Spider features a retractable RHT (Retractable hard top) folding hard top which, like on the F8 Spider, opens and closes in just 14 seconds. Completely redesigned the dual clutch gearbox, now with 8 gears, which is 30% faster and even 10 kg lighter than the previous 7-speed gearbox as the reverse gear is active only in electric. All this without forgetting consumption, which decreased in urban and motorway use by 8% in the WLTP cycle.

Like the SF90 Stradale, the SF90 Spider also offers a special set-up available on request to make the car even more performing and sporty: it is the Assetto Fiorano which includes, among other things, shock absorbers derived from the experience of the Prancing Horse in the GT competitions, extensive use of special materials such as titanium and carbon that lighten the 21 kg car, carbon fiber rear spoiler and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires.
