Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition: A flip phone like a refrigerator

Buyers can color a new version of a foldable Samsung smartphone according to their own taste. The company copied the technology for this from its kitchen department.

Anyone looking at smartphones in Germany usually sees black.

Similar to their cars, the majority of Germans are conservative when it comes to choosing the color of their cell phones, preferring to go for dark tones.

Samsung wants to change that, if necessary even after purchasing the smartphone - as long as it is a Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition.

The Korean company presented the foldable smartphone together with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in August (read more about the two models here).

While the latter, at just under 1,800 euros, is still reserved for particularly well-to-do customers, the Flip, with a starting price of 1,049 euros for this category, is supposed to appeal to a larger group of customers.

The focus of this model and also in advertising for it is more on the suitability as a lifestyle object, not on the technology.

The refrigerator principle

The Bespoke Edition of the Z Flip 3, which was presented on Wednesday afternoon via YouTube livestream, is intended to emphasize precisely this aspect.

So far, the company has offered refrigerators in Germany under the title "Bespoke", ie "tailor-made".

Personalization consists of installing fronts in your own choice of colors instead of the usual wooden or metal fronts.

For an extra charge, of course.

The personalization of the flip phones should be done in a very similar way.

Anyone who buys or owns a Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition should be able to choose its look within certain limits.

According to Samsung, there are 49 color combinations to choose from.

However, these are made up of a clear palette of colors.

"Thousands of color options" checked

You can choose between black and silver for the case frame and combine it with five colors for the front and back.

The company said it was not easy to choose these colors.

“Socio-cultural developments” as well as “current and future color trends” were the source of inspiration and “thousands of color options” were examined.

At the end of these investigations, which are apparently very time-consuming for Samsung, a color palette emerged that will probably not surprise anyone: blue, yellow, pink, white and black.

The right background

Just like the Bespoke refrigerators, you can only buy the smartphone with personalized colored lids on Samsung's website in the so-called "Bespoke Studio" by clicking on the colors of your choice, previewing the end product and clicking on "Add to cart".

A screen background of the same color is then set at the factory.

Samsung specifies the price for the new model at 1149 euros for the variant with 256 gigabytes of memory.

That is exactly 50 euros more than the Samsung model, which cannot be decorated with colors of your choice, would cost.

In the trade, however, you can get the standard version from 999 euros.

So it is not surprising that Samsung is offering an exchange bonus of 200 euros for the introduction if you trade in your old cell phone.

The group plans to take orders on its website from Wednesday.

With reference to the fact that these devices require “a separate production time”, delivery can only take place five to six weeks after the order has been placed.

And if you get bored of the chosen color combination at some point, you can have your Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition retrofitted with new lids via Samsung's Smart Repair Service.

The company doesn't say what that will cost, just explains: "Please find out about the price when you order a repair."
