Two days after the shooting accident in the "Rust" shoot, Hollywood is still shocked by the disaster that befell the life of the talented and promising photographer Halina Hutchins.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

One thing is for sure: it was preceded by a series of omissions during filming, and this is not the first time this has happened in Hollywood.

Cinema is an industry of illusions, which often tries to create false representations of dangerous actions and deadly violence - and often something goes wrong along the way.

From the beginning of the industrial days until today, many and many were injured and even died just because they took part in these productions.

Sometimes it happened because of an unfortunate mishap, of the kind that happens one in a million, and more often because of criminal negligence.

Each time, Hollywood has promised that it has learned its lesson and that it will perpetuate the memory of the victims with new safety rules that will prevent further tragedies - and each time anew, the grim history repeats itself.

"Across The Border"

As far as is known, this is the first filming tragedy in the history of Hollywood. "Across The Border" was a negligible western, one of thousands produced at the time, but went down in history in 1914 because of the accident that occurred during filming. The film starred a 24-year-old beginning actress named Grace Foreman, who was filmed with stage name Grace McKee, and it was her first role - and unfortunately, her last role as well.

During the film, she was required to ride a horse in the river. The horse stumbled, and she drowned. Owen Kramer, one of the photographers in the production, jumped at the heroic attempt to save her, but even though he was a skilled swimmer - he drowned as well. Only after a few days were the bodies of both found.

The tragedy is even greater considering that the two have already successfully filmed this scene, but the raw materials were damaged and it was necessary to film it again, thus sinking into the river three souls: of the star, of the photographer and of course the horse.

As early as a century ago, industry and the media knew how to exploit such tragedies.

The film's distribution company preceded its release and newspaper headlines celebrated the tragedy.

Many of them wrote about the star, who described her as "a beautiful and daring actress who lost her life for the sake of filming," but did not bother to say a word about the photographer who died in an attempt to rescue her.

Just as today's media highlights Alec Baldwin in the headlines, sometimes without referring at all to the name of the talented photographer who died in the horrific accident.

"Twilight Zone: The Movie"

The 1983 cinematic version of "Twilight Zone" purported to present four short and chilling stories, but none of them were as horrific as the accident that occurred on the set. As in the previous case, this time too the disaster occurred in the river, and as in the tragedy that occurred this week, it too was the result of disregard for safety regulations.

The disaster occurred in the filming of an episode about an American man, played by Vic Moro, who goes back in time to the Vietnam War. Santa Clara, an area in California with Vietnam-like terrain conditions, simulated the Asian country, and two American children of Vietnamese descent, Mika Dean La and Rena Xin-yi Chen, played Vietnamese children. The episode was directed by John Landis, an American-Jewish director who, according to the testimonies, did not really follow the rules when it came to safety in filming and employing children.

The negligence ended in the worst way imaginable.

During filming of a scene that included explosives and a helicopter flight, the aircraft hit three and killed them on the spot and in a horrific manner documented in real time and available online.

At a subsequent trial, the parents of the dead children testified that they were never told to use any dangerous tools, and worse, that the demanding Landis ordered the helicopter to get too close to the ground, which caused the horror.

After a lengthy and sensational legal process, Landis and his staff came out eligible.

Steven Spielberg, who co-produced the film, severed ties with him following the incident and declared "no film is worth dying for" - a statement that unfortunately did not stand the test of reality.

Behind the tragedy (viewing warning)

Brandon Lee and The Crow

A disaster that is very reminiscent of what happened this week, and probably the most famous tragedy of its kind - perhaps because unlike many other cases, this time the victim was not a superintendent or a crew member, but the main star.

Brandon Lee was the son of Bruce Lee, who himself died prematurely.

In 1994, when he was 28, Brandon starred in the movie "The Crow," and in the scene where his character was shot, live bullets were forgotten in the gun they used, which led to his death.

The investigation ended without indictments, but led the industry to draw conclusions about filming such scenes - conclusions that are not always meticulously implemented, as we learned this week.

Shannon, the sister of the late actor, addressed this over the weekend when she tweeted about the issue from a Twitter account dedicated to her brother’s memory.

She echoed Spielberg's remarks that "no one should be found dead by a gunshot in a photo."

It sounds so obvious, but the fact is that we are not learning the lesson.

The Double Death in The Dark Knight

Cinema anniversaries are full of stories about "cursed movies" that some of their crew members found dead during or after filming.

The "Dark Knight" from 2008 is one such case.

Everyone remembers the story of Heath Ledger, who starred in it in the form of the Joker, and died after the production without having time to see the film being released, but even before that there was another death.

New Zealand stuntman Connie Wycliffe died when he was killed in an accident during filming of a scene starring the Batmobile.

The vehicle collided with a tree, and he was hit in the head and died on the spot at the age of 41. The film is dedicated not only to the memory of the beloved Australian star, but also to the memory of the New Zealand stuntman who was unfamiliar to the general public, and went down in history under horrific circumstances.

Cursed movie.

"Midnight Rider"

There were many more cases of fatal accidents, which sometimes ended in serious injuries and sometimes led to death. This has often happened in high-profile films, such as "Deadpool 2", and the tragedy did not prevent their distribution and success at the box office. It is too short to address all of these human disasters, and we will be content with just one more case. It took place during a film from 2014 that was not planned to be a blockbuster, but is reminiscent of the horror of the weekend, as this time too the victim was part of the film crew.

This is the indie film "Midnight Rider", whose script dealt with the life of musician Greg Ullman. The disaster occurred on the first day of filming, and again it happened due to the criminal negligence of the production. It led to a train accident, in the end of which perished the assistant photographer Sarah Jones, who was 27 at the time of her death.

Unlike many previous cases, the filming was not completed and the film was never released.

Also, this time the legal process ended in indictments and convictions, including that of director Randall Miller who ran a year in prison.

His release conditions forbade him to continue directing, but he tweeted about them and directed a film last year.

Following Jones' death, several memorial projects have sprung up in the industry to promote safety in the industry and prevent the recurrence of similar cases - but as we learned this week, there is still a long way to go.
