Health pass: deputies and senators did not manage to agree

Deputies and senators failed Tuesday to agree on the bill "

health vigilance

" and the possibility of resorting to the pass until July 31, a period deemed too long by the upper house, AFP learned from parliamentary source.

The text will therefore have to go back to the National Assembly on Wednesday and then to the Senate on Thursday, before a final vote on Friday by the Assembly, which will have the last word.

The failure of the mixed joint committee (CMP) meeting on Tuesday at midday was largely predictable, given the profound differences between the texts voted on at first reading by the Assembly - where the government has a majority - and the Senate, dominated by the right-wing opposition.

The Republicans and the left have already planned appeals to the Constitutional Council.

Last Thursday, the Senate reduced from July 31 to February 28 the possible extension of the braking measures against the Covid-19 epidemic, deeming a parliamentary review necessary before the summer.

Compulsory vaccination: epidemic of sickness absence among New York firefighters

An abnormally high number of New York firefighters have asked to be placed on sick leave in recent days, a "

protest

" against the compulsory vaccine deemed "

unacceptable

" Monday by their boss, but which does not upset for the moment the functioning of barracks.

"

Sick leave increased and we know that this is a protest against this rule is obvious

," said the fire chief of New York Daniel Nigro, during a press conference in the town hall, the first day when some 378,000 municipal employees in the city risk having their pay suspended if they are not vaccinated. According to Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, 9,000 employees were in this situation, while 12,000 requested medical or religious exemptions. But sick leave, which involved 2,300 firefighters Monday (out of a total of 17,000 members) as their leader, are a way to circumvent the sanction on the payroll, he said.

The archipelago's prime minister, Pohiva Tuionetoa, said the main island, Tongatapu, and its capital Nuku'alofa would be confined until next Tuesday.

He told the press that this measure was aimed at "

ensuring the safety of our population (...) in order to prevent or minimize the spread of Covid-19 in the Kingdom of Tonga

More than 5 million deaths worldwide

The pandemic has killed at least 5,003,717 worldwide since the end of December 2019, according to a report established by AFP from official sources on Tuesday.

The United States is the most bereaved country with 747,033 dead, followed by Brazil (607,922), India (458,880), Mexico (288,464) and Russia (240,871).

These figures are based on the daily official balance sheets for each country, excluding upward revisions made a posteriori by some statistical agencies.

By taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, the WHO estimates that the global toll of the pandemic could be two to three times higher.
