The former hostage appeared to corroborate that she lived in the suburbs of the capital Bamako.

The spokesman for the French government, Gabriel Attal, criticized Wednesday a "form of irresponsibility" on the part of Sophie Pétronin, vis-à-vis "his security" but also vis-à-vis "the security of our soldiers ”, likely to be called upon to intervene to free hostages.

Information on the presence of Sophie Pétronin in Mali had been known for several days, after the broadcast last weekend of a search notice from the Malian gendarmerie.

Released in October 2020 after four years of captivity, she returned to Mali in March.

The woman, who had made her life there since her final installation in 2001, wanted to see her adopted daughter again.

The direction of the Malian gendarmerie had disseminated at the end of last week a message to all the units instructing them to “seek very actively” Sophie Pétronin.

The gendarmes had orders in case of discovery to "apprehend her and lead her under good escort" to the direction of the gendarmerie, said this internal message published on social networks without appearing who was at the origin of this broadcast.

“I don't know if I'm wanted and why,” she said.

She also insisted that we "leave (her) loved ones alone".

The Malian authorities did not respond to questions from AFP, which asked them if Sophie Pétronin was actively sought and if she could be returned to the border in the event of an arrest.
