In the fourth wave of the virus, the schools in Germany come more and more into focus.

Due to the increasing number of corona cases among children and adolescents, the German Teachers Association fears that it will lose control of the pandemic in schools.

“There are terrifying incidences in the group of children and adolescents.

The large number of corona outbreaks in schools must cause us great concern, "said association president Heinz-Peter Meidinger the editorial network Germany.

"The danger is immense that we will lose control of the pandemic in schools."

Many state governments have established a basic attitude on the subject of corona and schools that can be described as follows: "We make the world as we like it." Those responsible put their own political wishes above scientific expertise, said Meidinger.

At the same time, the teacher's representative pleaded for continuing to adhere to the mask requirement.

"I think it is extremely worrying if federal states, contrary to the recommendation of the Robert Koch Institute, say goodbye to the requirement to wear masks in schools, although the infections in school children are going through the roof," said Meidinger.

"The mask requirement makes our schools safer, as recent studies show," he said.

"That is why we will probably have to hold on to it as long as the 4th wave rolls through the schools." In recent months, numerous federal states had abolished the obligation to wear nose and mouth protection.

Vaccination is not necessary for teachers

Another open question concerns the vaccination protection of teachers.

Here Meidinger spoke out in favor of a 3G rule for teachers with particularly high numbers of infections.

In view of the very high vaccination rate in this professional group, it is not necessary to have a vaccination, according to Meidinger.

"Where the incidences are very high, I think a 3G rule for teachers is a good idea," he added.

“That means: teachers who are not vaccinated would then have to test themselves every day.” He justified this with the fact that most teachers come into contact with several different classes on a daily basis.

"The risk of infection for themselves and then for others as well is comparatively high if they are not vaccinated."
