The electronics stores of MediaMarkt and Saturn are apparently affected by an attack with an encryption Trojan throughout Germany and the Netherlands.
A company spokeswoman confirmed to SPIEGEL: “The MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group has been the target of a cyber attack.
On the night from Sunday to Monday, a group carried out a cyber attack.
All national subsidiaries of MediaMarktSaturn are affected. "
In screenshots of internal messages that were distributed on Twitter, there is talk of a "cryptovirus" that attacked 3100 servers and encrypted files. This also applies to the merchandise management system and the cash register system, they say: Accordingly, the MediaMarkt and Saturn stores could open and sell, but only for cash and without issuing sales documents. The information is consistent with reports from the Dutch media, which also refer to internal corporate communications. However, SPIEGEL has not yet been able to prove the authenticity of the screenshots.
The spokeswoman said: “We are currently working intensively with internal and external experts as well as the responsible authorities in order to analyze and identify the damage that has occurred as quickly as possible.
The online shops are not affected.
There is currently no need for action for our customers. "
