A month after the band Abba entered the top ten in the UK, Elton John - a musician whose career began quite parallel to that of the Swedes - managed to overshadow their achievement.

John's single, "Cold Heart," climbed to number one on the charts, an extraordinary achievement for a 74-year-old singer.

Unlike Abba, John needed a ton of gimmicks to return to the mainstream.

Thus, this single is a string of four of his past hits, which have become a duet with Doa Lipa and all in the production of the Australian electronic band Pnau.

This interesting mix of John, Lipa and Pnau is part of a larger project that has become an album called "The Lockdown Sessions", and in Hebrew - the sessions of the closure.

The album contains John's collaborations with other singers, with each recording his part at home.

Kind of a zoom session on the album.

The best talent was recruited for this project. Miley Cyrus, Lil Nass X, Eddie Vader, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Knicks. But the result is not completely flowing. There are times when it works, like in "Cold Heart" or in the Fat Shop Boys remake, but in other cases, those combinations sound stuck and unrelated. The piece "Always Love You", for example, Elton opens with the piano that characterizes him, and sounds at times like the classic "Piano Man". Elton sings passionately over and over again "I will always love you", when suddenly R&B beats come in and rapper Young Thug starts fluttering slime like "Fucked this bitch inside the tella". It is jarring and unobtrusively unrelated.

Despite the hype, "The Lockdown Session" is a disappointment.

Elton could have done a lot more here and brought the soundtrack of the period.

As a man in his seventies, John is at the head of the Corona risk group.

Not to mention that he is British, a place where the virus refuses to fade.

On the album cover, John is photographed with a showy mask, but in the content itself we do not get anything that talks about what John and men like him have been through in the last two years.

bungling.

Abba's 10 new songs belong to the now and the past.

It's just ingenious

The one who was ousted by Elton from the first place is the one who was previously defined as the new Elton, Ed Sheeran.

The two are expected to return to the top together at the end of the year with a duet they are recording in honor of Christmas.

Until that happens, Sheeran is also enjoying the release of a new album.

It has been exactly a decade since Sheeran burst into our lives, a decade in which he managed to become the greatest singer in the world.

Yes, yes, the statistics do not lie.

Sheeran is the most influential artist of the last decade and the one responsible for the most lucrative tour in history.

Sheeran's character is deceptive.

Pale redheaded Englishman with glasses, messy hair, average body, coming from the periphery.

An ordinary guy sitting today on the slot that once manned big-life characters like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

But this is only the exterior.

Behind her is a musical genius who cracked the method.

Sheeran's music manages to accurately combine pop, rock, folk, dance and R&B.

This combination is so deep that every time Sheeran releases a new song, the algorithm of the various apps raises a white flag.

Sheeran returned as mentioned last week with a new album, the fourth in his series of account marks. The first, "+" came out in 2011, "x" in 2014, "÷" in 2017 and now the result comes, with "=". Sheeran is no longer a child. He is 30 years old and in the last year has become the father of Lyra Antarctica, which he brought with his wife Cherry, his high school girlfriend. Although Sheeran seems to have had a year that she is not very rock 'n' roll, the album was preceded by two singles that were no less than sexy pop bombs. The first, "Bad Habits," was a bouncy hit, and at times Sheeran sounded a bit like the legendary Jimmy Summerville. The song became a huge hit, and so did the single that came out later - "Shivers".

These singles conveyed a sense that Sheeran was trading, even more than we were used to. If in the past his hits still had a quality and personal touch, these songs sounded one hundred percent belonging to the commercial pop world. Sometimes I have a hard time recognizing who Justin Bieber is,Who is Sean Mendez and who is Ed Sheeran because most of their hits are similar.

Despite the poppy impression obtained from "Bad Habits" and "Shivers", Sheeran's album begins in a completely different way.

The opening track, "Tides" is influenced by the British indie-guitar tracks of the nineties, probably as part of the current comeback of rock 'n' roll.

When "Tides" alternates with "Shivers" as the second segment, the listener gets confused.

Where is Sheeran taking us?

The rest of the album does not give an unequivocal answer.

There are songs here in all sorts of styles.

In two episodes Sheeran tries to make DeWeekend a tribute to eighties pop ("Overpass Graffiti" and "Stop the Rain").

In other tracks he returns to folk-pop songs.

These come one after the other in the heart of the album, so we get the excellent "Leave Your Life", "Collide", "2step" and "Stop the Rain".

The parades and the ticking prove: the rock returns against all odds, but not as we imagined

In the rest of the episodes, Sheeran tries to be more minor and get back to the beginning, so he puts out his captivating pop-rock ballads. In the third track on the album, "First Times" we get Sheeran with only the acoustic guitar, kind of amazed at his tremendous success, trying to even dwarf her. "I thought it would be different to play at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 people singing with me," he sings, "that's what I chased after, it was the dream." Later in the song, Sheeran reveals that his success is meaningless. "My greatest achievement," he sings modestly, "is four words I said when I knelt down."

This sincerity, the ability to talk about himself reliably in songs, makes Sheeran the greatest of them all. The life he describes are clichés, but they are real life. In "Collide", for example, he sings excitedly about the couple's vacation in Italy and it sounds like a realistic experience, one that anyone can identify with. These everyday elements are repeated again and again in Sheeran's songs and thus he probably wins the title of the greatest singer in the world.

The closing section of the album, "Be Right Now", is a reference to his new parenting.

"I do not want to lose anything," he sings over and over.

In this exposure Sheeran proves that despite publicity and fame, we are all the same and the most important thing to us is the children and the family.

Of course all this is confusing.

In "Shivers" Sheeran can describe a kind of flirtation or fling and a passage after that in "First Times" describe how huge his relationship with his wife is.

This gap was created for commercial reasons.

Sheeran can create honest and moving songs and at the same time create mega shallow pop hits.

Problematic, but since it works for him, it's hard to argue with.
