"Thomas' return went really well, he was in great shape," said Mr. Baptiste who was in Cologne (Germany) on Wednesday to welcome the astronaut whose mission ended with a successful landing off shore. from the coasts of Florida and a direct return to Europe, where a long period of rehabilitation to terrestrial gravity awaits him.

Three other astronauts also participated in this space mission: the Japanese Akihiko Hoshide and the Americans Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur.

He also welcomed the "successful departure" aboard a new SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, for the International Space Station (ISS) of German ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer, accompanied by three NASA astronauts. , Raja Chari, Kayla Barron, and Tom Marshburn.

Asked about the SpaceX rocket which would give "a shot of old" to the Ariane 6 rocket, the launch of which has been postponed once again to 2022, Mr. Baptiste denied this assertion.

"For a long time the Americans had problems with the shuttle, for a long time they did not have access to space, now they have SpaceX and that's great, let's not give in to defeatism, Ariane 6 is in the race", he asserted.

For the boss of CNES, Arianespace "responds perfectly to the needs of the market" and even if "the order book is not full, the expressions of interest are very strong".

He says he wants Europe to acquire rocket “reusability” technology, an issue “all the more important if you are at very high speeds”.
