Ten EU countries in a "

very worrying

" situation

The situation of the Covid-19 epidemic continues to deteriorate in the European Union and is considered "

very worrying

" in ten countries and "

worrying

" in ten others, the European disease agency said on Friday. "

The epidemiological situation in the EU is currently characterized by a rapid and significant increase in cases and a low but slowly rising death rate

", summarizes the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) in its latest risk assessment. "

Cases, hospitalizations and death toll are all expected to increase over the next two weeks,

" said the Stockholm-based European agency.

Among the 27, Belgium, Poland, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary and Slovenia are in the highest category of concern.

Countries in the “

worrying

category include

Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Romania and Slovakia.

The Covid long, especially in the head?

A study is controversial

Does the long Covid first have psychological springs? These symptoms "

could most often be associated with believing to have been infected

" with the coronavirus, suggests a study published earlier this week in the

Journal of the American Medical Association

(Jama), one of the world's leading medical journals. In patients who complain of lasting symptoms, we must therefore seek to “

identify cognitive and behavioral mechanisms

” and be careful not to “

attribute them by mistake to a Covid-19 infection

”, conclude the authors.

Immediately, the anger seized the associations of patients with long Covid who accuse the study of denying the reality of their disorder by giving it an essentially psychological explanation. This study gives rise to interpretations "

stigmatizing, dangerous and harmful for long Covid (s), especially as they are contested and not recognized by the entire scientific community and international associations

", ruled Thursday the French association AprèsJ20. Many researchers have expressed their skepticism about the methodology adopted by this study. "

A serological test (...) is not reliable as a marker of a previous infection

", also judges the British virologist Jeremy Rossman, quoted by the organization Science Media Center.

Austria wants to confine the unvaccinated

The Austrian Chancellor announced on Friday a national containment project for people who were not vaccinated or do not have an antibody certificate, while the country recorded a record number of new Covid-19 contaminations.

"

The goal is clear: we want to give the green light to national containment for unvaccinated people

," Alexander Schallenberg said at a press conference.

He did not specify the date of entry into force of the measure, which must first receive the approval of Parliament on Sunday.

Almost 65% of the population received the two doses of vaccine in Austria, which is lower than the European average of 67% and far from countries like Spain (79%) or France (75%).

Germany will live "

difficult months

"

Germany, hit "

hard

" by a fourth wave of Covid-19 must prepare for "

difficult weeks and months

", warned Friday the president of the institute for public health Robert Koch (RKI), pleading to tighten restrictions.

As cases of infection have skyrocketed in recent days in many parts of the country, Lothar Wieler has sounded the alarm: "

we have to assume that the situation will continue to worsen all over Germany

" and that this development "

cannot be stopped without new measures

", he warned at a press conference in Berlin.

"

We have before us difficult weeks and months (...)

", he insisted, worrying about an already tense situation in some hospitals which also suffer from a lack of nursing staff.

... and in Mauritius

The paradise island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, on Friday imposed a series of new restrictive measures to cope with an upsurge in cases, despite a high vaccination rate.
