A new study by CAM (Center of Automotive Management) an independent German body engaged in scientific research and strategic consulting in the field of transportation with an emphasis on technology and innovation, ranked the leading companies in the development of autonomous car technologies in grades 4 (completely independent driving in the presence of driver) and 5 (independent driving Without the presence of a person in the vehicle).

According to the results of the study, these are the technology companies that are leading the field of development of the fully autonomous vehicle.

The first carmaker in the top ten is GM in fourth place followed by 7-9 places Volkswagen, Tesla and Hyundai respectively.

In order to rank the companies, the study editors cursed the currently known data on the technological capabilities of the various companies in the autonomous field, both in terms of hardware and software, sensors, cameras, processors, test car travel, information accumulated by companies, fleet size, investments made in the field And other factors.

In the grade received by each company, a weight of 75 percent is given to the skills, knowledge and expertise in the field and 25 percent to the ability to assemble or apply and manufacture.

As mentioned, Alphabet (Google's parent company) operated in the field using waymo in the first place with a very high score in both sections.

Intel in second place with the Israeli Mobilai as the autonomous arm and with a very high-high score in the first section and very high in the second.

Amazon acquired last year the startup Zoox in third place with a high score in the skills and knowledge sections and a very high score in application capability.

And only in fourth place do we actually meet a first car manufacturer, this is General Motors to whose credit it should be said that she was one of the first to identify and has been active in the field with a cruise for quite a few years.

A very high-high score in the first section is impressive but a medium in the second section is sufficient for her for this position.

Chinese technology giant Baidu is in fifth place and just below it is Pony.ai, which develops technologies for autonomous cars, and may not say anything to most of you, but the interesting story is that this Chinese company was founded by two former Baidu employees.

Pony.ai got high scores in the first section but a low score in the second section does not allow it a higher place than sixth.

In seventh place, we meet again a well-known carmaker, this time Volkswagen, with immediately after and not surprisingly - Tesla and immediately after Hyundai.

It should be noted that the three companies have the same score in terms of skills, knowledge and expertise, but according to the study's editors, Volkswagen's production and application capabilities are higher than those of the first two.

Another interesting point about Tesla and Hyundai has to do with the fact that the former is the company with the highest investment ratio in terms of advertising or marketing in the industry and the latter announced this year alone $ 52 billion investment in smart transport with a view to becoming a leader by 2025.

Didi closes the top ten with another Chinese giant, this time in the field of transportation.

The company dominates a huge fleet of rental vehicles, taxi services but sells most of all through its app that allows you to book a taxi, shared ride or shuttle similar to Uber’s service (which it has acquired its operations in China).

And so down the table you can find other manufacturers, such as those who previously talked high-high about the autonomous car like BMW (in 12th place) and Mercedes (in 13th place), Toyota (in 14th place) when ahead of Apple, Renault And Nissan in 17th and 18th places respectively.

Ranking of companies and scores (Photo: screenshot, screenshot)

The field of autonomous cars, which was the hottest commodity until a few years ago for car manufacturers, has since cooled down and for most of the veteran industry a deep, deep storage in the lobby. There are several reasons for this, the most prominent of which - autonomous cars are not their business. These are hardware and software components, cameras, radars, processors, communications, artificial intelligence and other things that are simply not their area of expertise - they know how to make cars. Another and no less interesting reason is that this world of autonomous cars, the ones you order at the click of a button to pick you up, the kids from the class and the dog from the vet - will completely change the structure of our car ownership. The need to own several cars at home, if at all, no longer exists when one car can serve several people - and that means fewer cars. The car manufacturers, what do you know, make quite a living from this story of selling cars ...

And since on the other hand there is not much chance of software, hardware or processors starting to build cars, it is estimated that at some point the big car and technology conglomerates will merge into one body that instead of bickering over pieces of cake can swallow it whole, or at least larger parts than others.
