Ultimately, a million trees should make up this forest. A “green lung” that will only be successful in 30 to 50 years.

Some 233,400 tree seedlings began to be planted Thursday, November 25 on the site of the future forest of Pierrelaye-Bessancourt, a new green lung about twenty kilometers from Paris, announced the mixed union which is piloting the project.

Started in 2019, the plantations which aim to artificially create this new forest are entering a new phase in the coming months over around one hundred hectares, said the joint union for the development of the Pierrelaye-Bessancourt plain (SMAPP), in a joint communication with the departmental council of Val-d'Oise.

The stated objective is to create a new forest of one million trees, spanning 1340 hectares, straddling seven municipalities in the department.

"

It is a forest that will create a green lung between the forest of Montmorency and that of Saint-Germain-en-Laye,

" said Anne Locatelli-Biehlmann, the director of the mixed union, pointing to a "

very exceptional

" project.

84.5 million euros invested

The SMAPP gradually acquires land in this sector (724 hectares to date), on a historically agricultural plain, but whose soils have suffered pollution due to successive spraying by the City of Paris. "

This emblematic forest development will contribute to the development of biodiversity, to the fight against atmospheric pollution and against global warming

", underlined the mixed union. "

84.5 million euros will be invested for the creation of the forest,

" said this source.

In a very urbanized Paris region, and where land pressure continues to grow, this massif will be accessible to the general public but will only mature in 30 to 50 years depending on the species.

Oaks, hornbeam, rosehips or cherry trees have been selected by the National Forestry Office (ONF), the project manager.

In southwestern France, the Landes forest is another example of a man-made forest.

Covering an area of around one million hectares, it stands out as being essentially an industrial monoculture of maritime pines.
