The risks of a new Corona variant, which was first discovered in South Africa last week, are currently being discussed intensively.
In the meantime, the Omikron variant has also been found in numerous other countries, including Germany.
It is not yet clear what danger the mutant poses.
Experts, however, are concerned.
At the moment, however, the virus development in Germany would offer plenty of cause for concern even without this new development.
This is borne out by the latest figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
The nationwide
seven-day incidence of
new corona infections continues to rise and has reached a new high: According to the RKI on Monday morning, the value increased to
452.4
.
On Sunday it was 446.7, on Monday last week it was 386.5.
The seven-day incidence indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.
On November 8, the value in Germany exceeded the threshold of 200 for the first time and thus the previous high since the start of the pandemic in December 2020 (197.6).
Since then, new highs have been recorded every day.
Nationwide, according to the RKI,
29,364 new infections
with the
corona virus were
recorded
within 24 hours on Monday
.
On Friday, the highest number of 76,414 new cases was registered.
As a rule, fewer case numbers are reported at the weekend, partly because fewer tests are carried out.
According to the RKI,
the
death toll from the pandemic
in Germany rose by
73
to 100,956 cases.
Last Thursday, the number of corona deaths in Germany exceeded the threshold of 100,000.
The total number of cases is heading towards six million
On November 18, the federal and state governments set the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive yardstick for tightening the corona measures.
This value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants are in hospital within seven days because of a corona infection.
From a value of three, the 2G rule applies across the board for events in a federal state - that is, only those vaccinated against the coronavirus and those recovered from Covid-19 are allowed.
According to the RKI, the nationwide hospitalization incidence on Friday was 5.97.
No current figures will be published on the weekend.
According to the RKI, the total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 5,791,060.
The institute put the number of people recovered from illness caused by the coronavirus in Germany at around 4,852,800.
