Both in size and appearance, the Volkswagen Polo reduces gaps towards the big sister (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The Polo is Volkswagen's super mini car, so far everything is good and beautiful, as it has been since it was introduced in 1975.

Over the years however this car, like all cars, has undergone a significant inflation process in dimensions.

Although the Polo of 2021 is still shorter than the Volkswagen Golf of a decade ago, when it comes to wheelbase, it is only 2.5 cm shorter, that is, has a passenger compartment very similar in size to that of the big sister. Their trunk volume is the same, fitness Its towing is better and in terms of instrumentation it offers systems and technologies that were not even in the Passat of those years. So for those looking for a small car from the outside and spacious on the inside and with a quality cabin, in many ways the Polo is the new

Golf. But as in the past, The super mini with a price tag that leaves it elsewhere - it does not compete with the other line of super mini cars on the market, but is positioned and priced a little or a little far above them - is that justified?

The external appearance requires a second or third look to perceive that it is polo and not golf. In the current generation even more than in the past, or due to the dimensions or design, it is becoming more and more similar to it, a sort of replica on a slightly smaller scale, especially in the front with the LED lighting strip between the headlights and rear. Behind the initial look of the cabin that exudes functionality and versatility of Volkswagen, there is good material quality relative to most of the cars in its group. If you fancy the rest of the spirit and joy in the cabin, you can find more than that in the Peugeot 208 or Renault Clio.

What you get here is a very nice equipment list already at the base, a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, an 8-inch multimedia system with compatibility for Android and Apple, split climate control, front and rear parking sensors, wireless charging for mobile, adaptive LED lighting and more. The senior trim level tested (style plus) adds keyless entry and propulsion, a panoramic sunroof, tinted windows and 16-inch rims (15 in the style version).

Two adults will sit here comfortably (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

More important and impressive than these is the list of safety systems: adaptive cruise control, automatic braking even in reverse when detecting cross-traffic, warning of not keeping distance, correcting a deviation from the lane, warning a vehicle in "dead zone" and more. All of these come as standard.

Human engineering is good, the seats are of the hard type that supports the body and holds it in place (this is especially important on long trips, as this support allows us to less "hold" the body with muscles and get less tired over time). By touch pads instead of buttons fail to sabotage the overall feel. Good space in the front is reasonable plus in the back, two adults will sit here easily, and it is certainly possible to make a good trip here thanks to a seat at a good angle that allows you to sit without your knees "collected" too much. In the trunk there are no sticks and no tricks - no anchors or rings and no Skoda-style patents - an efficient and wide opening,A floor at two heights and that's it.

Square, efficient, with good volume but without flashes (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The Polo is marketed with the concern's 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that comes in most versions from state to state.

Here it has two suppliers, 95 hp in the style finish level and 110 hp in the style plus finish level being tested.

The gearbox is a dual-clutch robotic with 7 transmission ratios.

In terms of sensations the car exhibits more agility than the official figure of 10.4 seconds per hundred km / h.

Like the design, the behavior is solid and calm (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The ride comfort score which consists of a combination of suspension-brake work as well as noise isolation, gets a high score in the first section, with a restrained move of the shock absorber and good swallowing of the disturbances even when they come in a vicious sequence.

On the subject of noise insulation it needs the quality asphalt to be quiet, on most local paving types too many tire noises go inside.

Road behavior, like the design, like the cabin and like the comfort - tends to the neutral and safe side.

There are no surprises and no thrills - lots of grip, lots of confidence and a chassis that mostly conveys to you that you can trust it even when the driver is doing some nonsense.

Fuel consumption at the end of the test, which mainly included moderate driving and a short dynamic range, stabilized at 14.9 km per liter - a very good figure for a car without electric assistance and one with a supercharged engine that tends to start fuel consumption under load.

The design at the back also beckons to golf (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

As in the past, even the current facelift of the Volkswagen Polo is mostly a coffee party of what it was, plus subtle additions to stay in line with the competition. They can run and wave all kinds of patents, the one hybrid, the one designed, this one has a spacious cabin - its property is the customers who keep coming back and buying polo after polo.

And she needs them because at a price that starts at NIS 116,000 to NIS 129,000 for the test car, even the long list of equipment loaded on the facelift, when the more important and significant components are already at the entry level - still has a hard time making its price tag more convenient to digest. But as mentioned, it is not at all trying to compete in the lower segment of the market and especially there for its returning customers. This time, too, they will get from her what they received in previous times, only this time the value for money will be a little better.

For the rest, if you do not owe the emblem, you may want to wait for the first time of this group of news super mini waves of this group - Skoda Fabia, and then decide what to put the chips on.
