Renault, formerly a manufacturer that prided itself on leading crash tests across its range and breadth, received a severe image blow today with the publication of the results of the last crash tests of 2021. Their super mini electric car - Zoe finished the tests with 0 crash stars, a dubious honor for which only two cars won Ever in the European test (Fiat Punto and Panda), and the individual safety scores were also very low.

Also in the Romanian arm of the team - Dacia, low scores and a lone star were recorded at the end of the day.

At least Nissan, the third rib of the concern brought honor home with much praise for the new Qashqai.

The Zoe, which underwent a facelift during 2020, received improvements in the field of battery and electric propulsion, but the area of safety in which it was neglected, the organization says.

Not only was no progress made, but even a significant setback when the airbags in the seats for example, which in the past were of the type that protect the chest and head were replaced with those that only protect the chest.

And beyond these it finds it difficult to present convincing results both in pedestrian protection and in the functioning of its advanced safety systems.

Dacia Spring, lots of hopes, few stars (Photo: euro NCAP)

The second vehicle of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi concern that also passed the test was not particularly impressive. This is the Dacia Spring, a model in which Dacia has high hopes as it is one of the cheapest electric softwares in Europe and shows very good sales data since it was introduced in Europe. Introduced in Europe as it is heavily based on a Renault model called the City K-ZE manufactured in China since 2019.

The explanatory notes defined the Spring's safety performance as "problematic" with a high chance of life-threatening chest injuries to the driver and rear passenger heads in frontal collision as well as side impact.

"Renault has been associated with safety in the past," said Euro NCAP secretary Michael van Rantigan, mentioning the Renault Lagoon which was the first to receive 5 safety stars, "but these disappointing results for Zoe and Spring show that safety has become secondary damage in the group's move to electric cars." He also notes the fact that the cars received low scores in all the aspects examined,So this is not a point problem.

The Japanese side of this group represented by the new Nissan Qashqai is actually commendable and even won 5 stars of crushing and praise for its level of safety in explaining the test results.

Not only in the stars but also in the individual scores he earned in the sub-sections - 91 percent in adult protection, 91 percent in child protection, 70 percent in pedestrian protection and a 95 percent score for the car’s advanced safety systems - one of the highest scores recorded in his team.

Also on the list of the best with 5 safety stars in the last round were two Genesis models - Hyundai's luxury division, whose G70 sedan sports model received 89 percent protection for adults and 87 percent for child protection.

In pedestrian protection the score is 76 and its safety systems with a score of 88 percent.

Similar scores were also given to the crossover on the GV70 base when only pedestrian protection falls short of it with 64 percent protection.

The Volkswagen Group can also be satisfied with 5 stars for the new Skoda Fabia and the compact Volkswagen Caddy.

Two cars whose high scores on the test are self-evident and coated were the electric flagships of the luxury manufacturers BMW and Mercedes.

In the case of BMW it is the iX that besides the stars also records 91 percent in adult protection and 87 percent in child protection.

In pedestrian protection, the vehicle receives a score of 73 percent and 81 percent for advanced safety systems.

At Mercedes the distribution is 96 percent in passenger protection and 91 percent in children.

76 percent in pedestrian protection in case of injury and 80 percent in advanced safety systems.

It should be noted that this is a not very high score considering the very generous array of radars, sensors, lasers and cameras that the car is equipped with.

In the group with 4 safety stars are two electric vehicles as well.

These are the new Fiat 500 that settles for them due to lower scores in the protection sections of the occupants of the vehicle (76), children (80), pedestrians (67) and the advanced safety systems (67).

The big tram of the MG Marvel that will arrive in Israel is also with 4 stars.

She received 80 percent in the adult protection section, 75 percent in child protection, but only 55 percent in pedestrian protection.

The advanced safety systems actually get a good score of 80 percent.

Renault response:

"Renault is taking note of the results published by Euro NCAP following specific tests by Zoe E-Tech Electric according to its new protocol implemented in 2020."

Renault confirms that the Zoe E-Tech Electric is a safe vehicle that meets all regulatory safety standards. The standards are constantly evolving and becoming more stringent in all areas, especially in safety. Zoe was launched in 2013 and received five stars by Euro NCAP at the time. Euro NCAP protocol Has undergone five modifications since 2013. With the same chassis, a model can lose up to two stars with each protocol change.
