Research: Human brain cells have learned to play computer games faster than artificial intelligence software Israel today

Scientists were able to teach brain cells to play the video pong game in just five minutes • Faster than artificial intelligence that picks up the game after 90 minutes • Research leader Brett Kagan: "The cells actually live in a virtual world of their own"

Scientists from Cortical Labs, Australia, have shown that human brain cells grown by micro-electrodes have learned to play the video pong game (dubbed popcorn in Hebrew) faster than artificial intelligence.

While the cells took 5 minutes or 10-15 rounds to learn the game, the artificial intelligence software took 90 minutes or 5000 rounds to learn the game.

This is the first time that laboratory-grown human brain cells have not only responded to external stimuli, but are actually performing a goal-oriented task.

The scientists who connected the cells to micro electrodes taught the cells to recognize the position of the ping pong ball on the screen and at the same time move the surface that stops the ball from falling and bounces it back, so that the cells play the classic game and are in a kind of virtual reality.

Brett Kagan, who is leading the research on behalf of the labs, said: "We think it's fair to call these cells cyborg minds. The cells actually live in their own virtual world and play the game all day."

The researcher added that "it is true that the cells know how to learn to operate the system much faster than artificial intelligence software, but even in complex games, complex artificial intelligence software will know how to operate a broader and more complex skill than them."

The importance of the latest study is that it has been shown that brain cells that grow in the laboratory alone, can organize and show intelligent behavior.

In addition, it has been shown that cells can coexist and act intelligently as a group.
