What happened ?

Monday afternoon, a man armed with a bladed weapon took two women hostage inside a drugstore located at 21, rue d'Aligre, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris.

The victims would have managed to reach relatives, who were able to notify the emergency services.

Quickly, the madman asked to speak with Éric Dupond-Moretti, the Minister of Justice, according to police sources.

According to AFP, he also spoke, at his request, with master Sylvie Noachovitch, the lawyer of the former gardener Omar Raddad, convicted in 1994 for the murder of a rich widow, Ghislaine Marchal, in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes).

This case experienced a new twist at the end of last week, since the justice asked to relaunch the investigations, a first step before the review of the trial.

This request would be linked to the fact that the hostage taker "admires a lot" Me Noachovitch.

Who were the hostages?

They are the manager of the “Go Shop” store at 21, rue d'Aligre, and her 23-year-old daughter.

The first was released in the evening, around 10 p.m., the second has just been released on Tuesday, around 8 a.m.

What are the means in place?

Very quickly, many means were deployed, in particular to seal off the district and the various accesses to the rue d'Aligre.

Police officers and soldiers from the Sentinel force were notably deployed.

The BRI (Research and Intervention Brigade) began negotiations on Monday at the end of the day.

Where we are ?

In the evening of Monday, in connection with the negotiations, the madman proposed to release the younger of the two hostages.

She would have refused to leave her mother, as a police source explained to us.

According to information from the Parisian, the negotiations were going in circles on Tuesday morning and the kidnapper did not let go of his hostage by a centimeter, making any intervention delicate.

He claims he has been poisoned in the past and wishes to be recognized as a victim.

An investigation was opened for "kidnapping" and entrusted to the police station of the 12th arrondissement.

What do we know about the hostage taker?

According to our information, he is a 56-year-old man, born in Tunis, who quickly introduced himself as a former magistrate.

He is known to the police for his psychiatric disorders but is not considered dangerous.

A source on the spot told the Parisian to fear a "break in treatment", which would explain his switch.

Other known information: the madman lives in a home in the 11th arrondissement, near Boulevard Voltaire.

In view of his profile, the terrorist trail has been ruled out.
